First taste of Mogwai... I need more!
    #3496383 -

Okay guys... I finally got my hands on some Mogwai to find out what all the fuss is about... the album "Rock Action" FUCKING ROCKS.

I REALLY dig the way he (they?) create such great techno-esque tunes without the stereotypical "techno sounds"... instead, he uses real instruments it seems... which makes him more akin to a composer than a DJ... which is really fuckin' cool.

I'm really starting to appreciate the quality of music without lyrics... I was just never very into the traditional electronic-music sounds so I tend to stay away...

So.. here are my questions:

a.) Is there a categorical name for this kind of music?

b.) Can you recommend other artists with the same style?

c.) Which other Mogwai albums should I have?

Yeah! Mogwai is the shit!

1) post-rock, experimental rock, space-rock, etc. Visit their www.allmusic.com page.
2) Godspeed you Black Emperor!, Experimental Audio Research, Mono, Broadcast, Tortoise
3) YES! You NEED "Happy songs for Happy People" NOW!
IMO better than Rock Action (which is very good)
Young Team is also very good.

I like how he uses vocals on Happy Songs as another instrument, very distorted to the point where it just becomes another lead voice.

Mogwai is EPIC soundscape beauty

Mogwai plays such a good live show! Go Go Mogwai!

Thanks for all the recommendations guys... you're right, Blastrid, Mogwai is fucking EPIC.. such a good word to describe it. So much emotion in his music... and without cluttering things up with vocals it's almost like you're free to delve even deeper into the emotional value of the music.

When I get home tonight I am going to try to track down all these recommendations... first will be the other Mogwai albums, because I'm really impressed with his abilities and style.

If anyone else has more recommendations of similar artists, keep them coming!

Mogwai is also UNIVERSAL.

everyone i've given the CD to, i've recieved a good response from!
most of the people i introduce Mogwai to, are usually as ecstatic as you seem to be!

Hahah.. yeah... I had this kid over the other night (friend of a friend, dumb as a rock, the poor kid.. but I digress..) and while we were toking in my living room I had it playing in the background... he was completely trancing out to it. Asked me who it was like 6 times. (I told him each time.)

Then he IM'd me the next day asking who it was.. heh.

check out Mum...the "U" has one of those "accent egus" as they call it in french.

I just bought the album "Finally we are no one" and it is very very good. Especially the track " Green grass of tunnel" Can anyone recommend some other good MUM albums?

And how has no one mentioned Sigur Ros yet?! (accent egus on the "O")
Amazing music.

Sigur ros rules. Most beautiful music ever made.

Mogwai kicks ass. Young team and Rock action are awesome. Come on die young was really disappointing. Haven't heard Happy songs. If you ever see them live make sure you bring ear plugs.

Check out Godspeed you black emperor as well.

Mogwai are a really good band and glad someone mentioned EITS, GY!BE, Sigur Ros, and Mum (even though they're not really post rock).

I'll just suggest those interested check out Mono who are a really great Japanese band on John Zorn's Tzadik label in the New Japan series. their album "Under the Pipal Tree" is well worth checking out and my favorite of the post rock genre.
