How does Gatorade work?
    #3495063 -

I'm always amazed that something with sodium in it is soooo good to drink after a workout. How can this be?

so I'm losing salt and I have to drink more of it to not get dehydrated? It doesn't seem to work all that well at sea. How do electrolytes work?

Gatoraaaaaade (random)

Gatorade hydrates you faster than water. Your colon actually takes up water by using a sodium coupled glucose transporter and chloride channels, which cause an osmotic pull accross the lumen of the duodenum and jeujunum of your small intestine. So it is the sugar and salt in gatorade that help "pull" the water into your body. However, if the osmolarity of the solution is too high (too much sugar and salt) you can actually dehydrade yourself. If you don't want to buy Gatorade you can mix 1/2 tablespoon salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar in a pint of water. It won't taste good buy it'll rehydrate you.

That was awesome man. Not only did you just bust in and kick some major gator-ASS by letting us know all the science, you also managed to finish off with a strong MacGuyver-esque finish by giving us a home recipe. (for those more feminine, you can refer to it as a Martha-Stewart-esque moment)

Awesome first post SPACEWrangler, YEEEEEEEEEHAW!
