new operatings systems, new isn't always better

Some of you may or may not be aware of a new operating system that Microsoft is coming out with. It's called Windows XP - the XP standing for "experience".

This article about Windows XP isn't long but it is insightful. Here's a bit of it.

"What Smart Tags does is to allow Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser -- which of course is included in Windows XP -- to turn any word on any Web page into a link to a Web site approved by Microsoft.

Or, to put it simply, Smart Tags enables Microsoft -- through the browser running on your PC -- to re-edit anybody's site, without the owner's knowledge or permission, in a way that tempts users to go to a site chosen by Microsoft."

A well respected security expert, Steve Gibson, also comments on it and says how its, "the enabling factor for the creation of a series of `Ultimate Weapons' against which the fundamentally trusting architecture of the global Internet currently has no effective defense. Windows XP is the malicious hacker's dream come true."

Yes. Stay away from Windows XP..

"Windows XP is the malicious hacker's dream come true." - Yes it is. It also enables hackers to more easily send useless packets to a server ( ie. denial of service attack)

Xp is an absolute joke, a couple of my friends offered me a copy of beta 2 but i dont want it...if you install new hardware you actually have to rign up microsoft for a new access code...this is supposed to stop the "warez" problem some how.

there are a lot of mis-informed people here... first off the user has complete control of smart tags, and by default they arent installed, and dont come packaged with the browser, they are a part of MSN's explorer (no flaming, just like the phone company situations its legaly a different product), to turn on smart tags you must clikc the smart tag icon on the toolbar, and even then you still do not have smart tags on, it sends you to a MSN site where you have to download an IE plug-in, then have total control weather its on or off by a click on the toolbar. Done dont argue thats the way it is. period.

Second, adding hardware/changing hardware is NOT an issue, the OS can tolerate changes in hardware. Simply put if you need to change three different cards, do them one at a time like you should to begin with. The only time you need to re-activate is if you do a total system overhaul. And you dont HAVE to call them like one person claimed. All activation can be done online. Dont have an internet connection dont bitch, you have 14 days to activate and you have over 70 hours per week in witch you can call (lines are open 8a - 10pm monday through friday) or you can get a free internet connection use it once and activate it that way.

By the sound of it you people are putting it down before trying it (ie: i was offered beta2 but i wouldnt try it cause i thought it was no good.)

Im going to install a new OS. Dont like the performance of Win98. So Win2K would be a way better choice than XP?

I use my pirated copy of windows xp and I don't mind it. I used to run windows 2000 but I had to change to Windows XP for some reason, I forget why.

Are you able to install Service Pack 1 with your pirated copy of Windows XP?

XP kicks win2k's ass. I have both on about 700 computers, and XP wins hands down.

Yea sure, if you use a product-key which hasn't been banned by MS...

Wow... talk about pulling an old thread from the grave... 06/20/01...

> XP kicks win2k's ass. I have both on about 700 computers, and XP wins hands down.

I would have to disagree.  I have both win2k and winxp and would drop xp if I could.  My dual p3/450 /w 256M running win2k runs circles around a p4/2ghz /w 256M running xp.

I have only seen one or two blue screens on w2k in the last three years.  I have seen that many on the XP box in the last three days.

Of course I would drop both win2k and xp for a good Solaris install any day.

Really? I've had XP twice, and that was hardware related.

It is more of a resource hog, but I find it to work very well.
