My System Is Dying
    #2520677 - 04/03/04 04:17 AM (13 years, 24 days ago)

I recently was afflicted with some viruses that have bypassed and destroyed my norton anti-virus program and my norton internet security, as well as slowing my system to a crawl and making me unable to access any email even, web-based accounts. Also it changes my IE starting page everytime my computer reboots to some russian website... I'm sort of overwhelmed as I'm not really a 'computer person'. Is there some way I can fix this? Anyone want to pm me with a little help, it would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking perhaps of just picking up a copy of windows xp and reinstalling my system; would that fix the problem? I'm freaking out a bit right now.

-Look at the list of running processes by hitting ctrl-alt-del.
-Search on google information on any of the listed processes you do not recognize.
-Kill all suspicious looking processes you find.
-Try running norton again.

If this fails, then yes, reinstalling xp fixes everything (forgive me if you know this already, but it also would erase your hard drive).

hope this helps

edit: a freely available program called "hijackthis" may also prove useful

Thanks Anno, but I have Adaware as well as Spybot.  I ran Spybot and found 4 things and got rid of them...no help.  My Adaware is now non-functional.  I also have ZoneAlarm as well as the norton antivirus I mentioned and Norton Security firewalls.  I don't know how this happened.  Damn porn sites..sigh...I guess I'll just need to reinstall my operating system and hope I don't mess up horribly.

Thanks ddaedalus, I'll check that program out if its free.  And I'm getting that bazooka spyware thing too.

Edit: Update, I ran bazooka and some online virus finders including bit defender.  Managed to clean up some questionable files.  Now my Norton Security is back and my system is more or less stable.  yay

Yes, a reformat and reinstall would solve a myriad of problems. If it's a screwed up as you say, that's what I'd do.
