Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We're so glad you could attend
Come inside! Come inside!
There behind a glass is a real blade of grass
be careful as you pass.
Move along! Move along!

Come inside, the show's about to start
guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth.
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo.
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll ....

Soon the Gypsy Queen in a glaze of Vaseline
Will perform on guillotine
What a scene! What a scene!
Next upon the stand will you please extend a hand
to Alexander's Ragtime Band
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Performing on a stool we've a sight to make you drool
Seven virgins and a mule
Keep it cool. Keep it cool.
We would like it to be known the exhibits that were shown
were exclusively our own,
All our own. All our own.
Come and see the show! Come and see the show! Come and see the show!
See the show!

Cynthia: Get up and dance to the music!
Get on up and dance to the fonky music!
All: Dance to the Music, Dance to the Music
Freddie: Hey Greg!
Greg: What?
Freddie: All we need is a drummer,
for people who only need a beat
I'm gonna add a little guitar
and make it easy to move your feet
Larry: I'm gonna add some bottom,
so that the dancers just won't hide
Sly: You might like to hear my organ
playing "Ride Sally Ride"
You might like to hear the horns blowin',
Cynthia on the throne, yeah!
Cynthia & Jerry got a message they're sayin':
Cynthia: All the squares, go home!
All: Dance to the Music, Dance to the Music

How about some live Sly?  My father saw sly in eleventh grade.  He said it was the best show ever, but in the height of racial tensions, he was the only white person there.  He tells me all the time about this group of black girls who kept throwing shit at him and his buddy for dig'n the jams kicked out by Sly and the Family.

You ever see them Rip?  I know its not the dead, but hey. Funk.

I saw ELP (multiple times) and Sly in the early Seventies.

ELP was always awesome but the one time I saw Sly (around 1971 if I recall correctly) it was a disaster. The show was way late starting, apparently because Sly had just shot up. I believe it, because when he finally made the stage he was nodding out big time. They had to prop him up. The music was terrible -- a huge disappointment. People were booing. Sly stopped and looked out at the crowd blearily and said, "Be cool, people, be cool!"

It was at that point that people started tossing metal folding chairs at the stage. My friends and I looked at each other and decided to boogie on home.

That's the only concert I ever left early. I was really really upset because I was a big fan of Sly and the Family Stone and I had very little money at that point in my life -- it had been a sacrifice to scratch up the money for the ticket.

I still love Sly's music, though. Too bad he was incapable that night of producing it.

Oh man I would have been heart broken! Sly rules my playlist. That sound can not be copied.
