can you just boil your jars in a pot of water, just put your jar in there and start boiling, then add your substrate and colonize as normal? im asking this because I don't want to buy a pressure cooker, not enough funds, thanks.

Well, GT, the answer is both yes AND no. For PF tek, yes you can boil in a regular old covered stock pot. It works great. And if you are extra clean when innoculating, you may never have to get hit by contams. However, if you ever decide to move on to quarts of rye or birdseed, you will HAVE TO HAVE a pressure cooker. SO check out Ebay and get a big daddy one someday, if you want. PF TEK will do you fine forever though, if you don't ever get adventurous. 8)

Really? What would you do? Oven-sterilize the seed or whole brown rice, then add to jar then boil the whole lot? FF

Here's what you do... 1.Cook your rice according to the package(w/ no butter or salt!) 2. This is the only thing my monkeys use the microwave for, takes 45 min 3. load up your jars 4. steam say hello to your sterilized jars full of brown rice you can also add verm into the rice if it comes out too soggy for your taste. peace

Well... If you added your substrate after you steralized wouldn't that make the whole procedure pointless?

Wat?? you have to COOK it first. Yes you could add the rice in the jars while it's still super HOT and MAYBE you wont have to STERILIZE. But why dont you try it. Then you can tell me if it's pointless or not.

Pressure cookers make life a lot easier and the results are more dependable than a pot of boiling water. And you can find one at your local thrift store for about $3.

go to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. They should have lots of pressure cookers there for real cheap. I bought a brand new MIRRO 12 quart PC at my hardware store for only $30. It was opened box. You should buy a pressure cooker, open it. Return it, then go back in a couple of days to see that it's magically on sale for 1/2 the price you originally bought it for. =) - Celsius
