spore temps...
    #345701 - 06/21/01 12:53 AM (23 years, 7 months ago)

spores die at 32F right? would storing a syringe in a fridge affect viablity or germination time when warmed and used later?
i am having trouble trying to determine wether my source of error is the spores themselves or the storage area...

In my experience, a fridge is fine for storing spores. Are you having germination problems?

Hey auto, I was just reading a thread that brought up a good point;
mushrooms spores are designed to withstand climactic flux to a
much higher degree than the parent (mushroom),so if spores in
say Canada or Washington can survive a harsh winter only to pop
pop pop up again year after year than chances are theyll be OK
in the fridge for a long time. Or at least lets hope so ;)=D

There are many mushroom species which grow in cold climes,spores and mycellium of Amanita muscaria in Siberia withstand -50 winter temps.

Psilocybe cubensis does not grow in areas that experience freezing temps, they generally come from countries close to the equator. However, I froze a test syringe and it still worked.

Ao, no, 32F will not kill your spores.

yeh didn't think so :smile: i have stored myc and spores that way before, thanks for all your help guys!!!
i believe it was either a non-viable print... or i ruined the print making a syringe...
i had no knife pre-sterilized coz i forgot about it (long story) so i rubbed it down with an alco-wipe and then dried it on some sterile paper... surely this would not half killed the spores? the *minute* amount of ethanol left on the knife would not even have touched all the spores. the print was a year old (maybe more) which could have affected viability i know.

any other ideas?
