Who here steralizes their casing layer
    #344970 - 06/20/01 05:35 AM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Name what casing you use and whether you steralize it?

I am trying to case rye grain with verm at the moment with the intention of switching to peat moss or some other casing asap. I have succeeded casing verm\brf cakes in verm but I want to take verm right out of the equation but I failed when I tried casing grain in peat moss. So I am taking a step back and casing grain in verm first.

But I am interested even in whether people sterzlize verm before casing with it or not? As well as other casing types.

I steam my casing material for two hours, no matter what I'm casing with. Even straight verimiculite.

Since The casing layer [just]provide a damp inviroment for your casing and adds H20 to produce mushrooms its best to sterilase it to eliminate comtam risks....!?!
My two cents anyway..

i dont sterilize, and i am getting great yields! but i do think sterilizing would help a bit in case your fungus is not strong enough to fight off any contaminants... just my opinion though.......

I use Miracle grow moisture control potting soil. It's a blend of coconut fibers and peat moss. I mix roughly a 2:1 Ratio of miracle grow to verm. I don't sterilize. Just finished the 5th flush with no contams. This stuff is better than straight verm, or the 50/50 (IMO). By the way, i use BRF/verm cakes.

This Miracle grow moisture control potting soil sounds good. Is it widely available?

I sterilize 50/50+ and let sit outside for two days in a autoclavable bag. "0" contams.

Tried and tested by many, I use a peat lime casing approximately 10 parts peat moss to 1 part limestone flour, well mixed and moistened.

I nuke my casing in the microwave for several short bursts (4 minutes at a time), leave it for a few hours and repeat the "Pasteurisation". This is mainly to eliminate those little black flys which hatch out of most peat based soils.

Thanx for sharing some different perspectives on it.

When using parts that just means like

10 cups of peat
1 cup of lime
1 cup of gypsum

right?

Mine goes into a vented tupperware container for about 5 mins in the micro. Mine is 1000 watt, so your times may vary, because like all the pop-corn and shit says, microwaves may vary.
