I think that free will as meant in the bible means that we are free to break the commandments if we choose. Again you guys chill!I'm just a neophyte to all of this as stated earlier but that is how i myself understand free will in relation to the 10 commandments, we are told by God to act a certain way but still given the freedom to disobey, although given the consequences of disobedience as set out in the bible i myself think it is foolishly unwise to do so

I have a huge problem with the Ten Commandments. They're not guidelines at all. Sometimes you're even better off doing the opposite of what they say. They promote blind obediance, selfishness, and dependence on outdated social structures.

I see a lot of people in here saying stuff like this.

I want you to know that you have missed the point.

To really Love anyone let alone God is to completly put self aside and put others needs first.

The Ten Commandments are another example of what true Love is. When you truly love you can follow those " Rules " quite easly.

To have no God before me simply meane that By Loving God you place his needs first.

Anyway I really believe that many of you really don't know what it is to truly deeply Love.

Yourself has nothing to do with Love

God revealed to me just this morning the period in my life where i was truly happiiest(outside of that 7 days back in 74) It was when i was caring for a girl in a wheel chair as well as looking after my(for the most part) bedridden parents with no time for my usual self indulgences

The Ten Commandments are another example of what true Love is. When you truly love you can follow those " Rules " quite easly.

I was already following the commandments naturally. When i first invited God into my soul to correct my spiritual misalignment(s) i was afraid i was going to be like a spiritual mack truck in need of a complete overhaul, instead it turned out i was more like a Stradivarious(sp?)violin in need of a little fine tuning. I'm not saying my work won't continue, probably with new smaller things than those he has already tuned up but as long as i know that it is His will i am happy to change

Holier than Thou, are we? Being a member of a religious group doesn't grant you knowledge of the ultimate truth. If anything, membership tends to blind you to that group's own shortcomings.

No one knows true love, as it is just as imaginary as perfect honesty or perfect understanding. Nice concepts, but hardly practical.
To be able to survive in this commercialised society, everyone has to be at least a bit selfish at times. If everyone were to Love their neighbor when we wake up tomorrow, the economy would collapse instantly.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. To me, Love in the highest sense is allowance -- allowing anything and everything that may result from free will. This is unbridled chaos, but also unbridled creativity. By allowing otherselves to experience what they wish to, you're allowing them to create the experiences they wish to. So I do agree with this: To really Love anyone let alone God is to completly put self aside and put others needs first. Because otherselves' greatest need is free will, in order to learn and experience. That's what life is all about. I honor free will above everything else on this earth, because that's the greatest gift of Love that I can give to anyone.

From my perspective, the Ten Commandments, or any moral guidelines for that matter, attempt to restrict free will, even if it's only suggestion. They don't allow people to make their own decisions as to how to treat otherselves. Some people who take Christianity seriously even feel forced to follow the Ten Commandments. They feel threatened to either follow these rules or suffer the consequences (burn in Hell!). This is truely sad, for their free will, the very nature of their divinity within, is abrogated. How are people to learn the ways of karma and empathy when they're forced to live a certain moral code and don't directly experience the effects their actions have on others?

Moral codes are an attempt to control, and control is a result of fear. Fear and control, I think, are the opposites of love and free will.

Allowing murder, rape, child molesting as a result of someone else's free will?

And if God were to let all that evil stuff go unpunished he would be as spineleless as those that look the other way. Mercifully God doesn't just just look the other way

How is that evil?

Or better yet, what is evil? Is it what threatens one's sense of security and human dignity?

Nothing overlaps.

Allowing murder, rape, child molesting as a result of someone else's free will?

Yes, allowing these is also love. You must allow people to learn about the laws of cause-effect in their own way, no matter how horrifying it may seem to you. When considered in a short-term linear perspective this looks like a terrible thing for me to write. But if you consider a bigger picture, in terms of karma and reincarnation, it makes more sense. This is why I made a post a little while ago about victimhood. Victims are responsible for what happens to them, no matter how defenseless, young, or innocent they are.

Life is simply about experience and learning lessons. Not all people are learning the same lessons. You have to allow people to learn and experience what they need to, for the sake of evolving. If someone doesn't learn something that they need to progress spiritually, they'll be stuck in a loop reinarnating until that particular lesson is learned.

Let me also clear something up, in case you got the wrong idea. If someone is suffering, you should definitely help them in any way you can, but ONLY if they ask for your help. If they ask for your help, free will is respected by answering their call. If they don't ask for your help, they don't want your help, and thus free will is respected by letting them handle the situation by themselves.

I totally agree with you that nothing overlaps and that there are NO grey/gray areas, but come on man, when we accept rapists, child molestors and murderers as those just "fufilling their karmic destinies"(or w/e) then exactly what furthur madness are we letting ouselves in for?

There are no grey areas in what? Life in general?

If that is what you mean, that's the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Life is but a series of shades of grey, metaphorically speaking. Everything is variant, and everything has a variety of variables.

If that is not what you meant, then what did you mean?

From my admittedly somewhat brief understanding of God and the Bible, there ARE no grey areas, as much as it would please the human intellect to believe there are. I would take it from your post that you believe evil VS good are all relative and subjective to our own human variable factor(believing whatever it is we WANT to believe) I myself can not agree but am currently in no position due to my novice stature as a born again Christian to argue, not due to my lack of faith or belief but rather lacking the requisite tools with which to defend my position intellectually

Whatever you say... it doesn't matter that you can't argue it, because I wouldn't uphold the other end of said argument anyway.

All I've had to do to see that the world is NOT black and white is look around with open eyes... but you can believe what you want to believe.

I'm glad you have this attitude... I hope that you will be able to maintain it after you feel you are educated enough to not be lacking the requisite tools with which to defend your position intellectually.

Peace and love.. I see that you have a good head on your shoulders--but I advise you to stay aware of yourself enough to know when you are no longer harboring this same attitude towards others' beliefs.

(P.S. I'm not saying that this necessarily will happen, just that it MAY happen. Consider acceptance of a set of beliefs as a form of close-mindedness... you are choosing to adhere to one set form instead of considering all equally, and by doing so you are potentially "luring" yourself into a stance of superiority over your fellow man. If you can keep this in check while maintaining your faith, you truly have your eyes open.)

Isn't grey comprised of smaller particles of black and white?

This reminds me of the String Theory, except in binary.

But of course, good and evil are terms in stories
