how do you guys find this shit? Substitutes needed

I'm trying to use the Simple Cubensis growing guide at growmushrooms.org and can't even get the project off the f'n ground because I can't find some of the stuff I need. First it was the canning jars - I had a whole heap of shop assistants asking me, "a canning jar??", now I have all the garden suppliers asking me, "what's vermiculite?". Any way, I found some glass bowels with clip on lids to substitute for canning jars, I'll just have to wrap them in alfoil and plastic when sterilizing them. What I need now is a substitute for vermiculite. I'll probably need a substitute for perlite too. I've got everything else (except 'organic unbleached flour' instead of 'organic brown flour' - I figured it's the same shit). If any one can help I'd be appreciative. I live in Australia, by the way - thus the lack of 'common' supplies.

here's a good site explaining what vermiculite and perilite are
here is a site where you can buy canning jars

if you look around you'll probably find lots of companies willing to send you some perilite or vermiculite if you act like a wombat and dig around the web;)
