I think they tried to sell you something. I don't see where fir bark would replace vermiculite.

Just wondering why where you trying to get verm at a pet shop?

Ive been to 4 nurseries or garden stores, and every one had verm. They ALL had coco fiber, ALL had perlite, and ALL had lime stone... hehe... Maybe its just where I live.

Try just buying verm over the internet, im sure you can find a bag of it...Try calling some nursieries around, maybe some which take a while to drive to, and then drive out there hopefully they have the other shit too...

Oh yah, fir bark will not retain water like verm, and probably will have contam's in it.

Many pet shops sell vermiculite for hatching reptilian eggs.

Try hydroponic shops and garden centers.
