pasteurizing poo
    #3369658 - 11/16/04 06:05 PM (12 years, 21 days ago)

Hey guys, I just aquired a small bag of horse poo, which I'm planning to pasteurize. Problem is, my oven is broken. Is it ok to pasteurize it in a bag submersed in water on the stove, like with straw, or will it stink up my house for a week? It's really old and dry and doesn't smell too strongly now. Also will pasteurizing it on the stove leech out the nutrients or anything like that? Thanks for any advice.

The stove will work fine so long as you remember that ou are pasteurizing and sterilizing. As ofr if it will smell my best answer is yes and no because I have had both.

what about using a crock pot with water in it with the pillow case method? then you could sterilize it outside. say for those who have the option put in a box outside plug ?or how ever trying to get away from cooking poo in the house.

haha.. It's ok, my roomies don't care if the house smells like shit for a little while, but I do care if the smell is going to be horrible or last for a long time.  Thanks for replying guys.

Just thought I'd give an update.. I pasteurized the poo on the stove, using a pillow case and meat thermometer at a steady 170 F for 1.5 hours. There was no 'poo' smell, it just smelled very rich and earthy, not bad at all. The water also turned DARK brown.. almost black. Just wondering if that's normal?
