This has happened before, but It was 1,000 times as stinkeyand I threw it out. Yesterday I pasteurized some horse poo/straw and let it cool overnite. I wake up and smell it and it stinks, not like shit but a strange stink. Its not that powerfull but the smell is there. It smells like ocean water, mabey seeweed. I dont work with horse poo that much, I usually use straw or compost. Can I use this poo? I mean will the mycelium rip through it if its stinkey or not? What does your pasteurized poo smell like? Thanks

lol... this is just a funny thread, sorry. "How does your shit stink people??" I'm guessing that since you pasteurized it you should be ok, smell or no smell. I mean, casing often smells funny, straw itself smells funny, they all got their own smells. I think if you followed correct procedure, that smell is most likely due to the kind of poop and straw you have. No form of contam that I know of could take over overnight and cause a smell, I would say you're alright.
But maybe wait to see if someone has ever had "ocean scented" poo before.

I agree that straw definitely has its own smell. I keep think I smell it when I get in my car. The smell is every where!

When my friend did his pillowcase bulk sub. straw and poo mix, he was told NOT to leave the pas. sub. for more than a day or two. He suggests you only use some of the sub. in case it goes bad you wont loose as much spawn.

your probably pasteurizing at too high of a heat, when you over heat poo, it will stink to high heaven. Properly pasteurized poo should have an earthy soil smell, no poo poo stink or ammonia smell.

speaking of stinky poo, I am going to be scooping up a TON of horsepoo/straw from the stables tomorrow, and i have searched everywhere to find out how to pasturize this stuff and how long it can stay and/ or if it will go bad soon. Details, please!
thanks! :-)

Well, I gathered my stable poo, and sifted through it and got all the shit out. I found glass, plastic, ceramic pot peices, particle board, and sticks in my shit. I then mixed it with 25% straw, and pasturized for an hour, really about 70 minutes. I drained it as best I could then placed it in a towel, and stomped the remaining water out. I let it sit for 4 days in the pillowcase, and it was also wrapped up in a lysoled trashbag.Iit got less stinkey as time went on, and when used, it smelled strongly of earth. So I geuss you CAN let it sit for a few days, I think its a little better as the smell goes away

Get a big pot, a candy thermometer, and a pillow case. You also need the little rack that comes in with your pressure cooker, to keep the pilllow case from burnin(Or somthing similar). I pasteurize in my pc, with the lid off. Just keep the temp at 150-175 farenheight(Do NOT let it go over 175, it will fuck up) for an hour. No lemon, or bleach is nessassary, but one can add a capfull of bleach to the water.

now, can pasturized poo be put in the freezer or fridge to preserve it until you are ready to use it,or should it be used fairly soon after having been pasturized?
