the danger of televisoin
    #3361849 - 11/14/04 11:08 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

i was just sitting infront of the television watching liar liar a jim carrey movie, at the end all is well as the family is once again rejoined. i felt wonderful watching as the family came back togeather in the final seconds of the movie, as if i was part of the family, and then i came to my senses.

instead of living my own life i was living viacriously through a movie on tv. without ever leaving my couch i felt wonderfuland happy as "my" family was re-united.

people say that drugs are dangerous that they change your state of mind. That they give you false feelings of goodness and emotional warmth. The exact same feelings that are beamed out through the airwaves to every home in america. Bathing the population in false feelings of warmth, unity, fear and aprehension. one could live a life through the eyes of an actor without ever leaving the couch.

This is more dangerous than every drug in the world combined. loosing ourselves to live the false "act" of a life through someone else.

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

"People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

I equate excessive TV wtching with alcohol abuse. I can sometimes feel my brain turning off when I watch TV just like if I drink a six pack in any given night just because I have nothing better to do . I try to stick to PBS and channels like that but sometimes I find myself watching Wife Swap or something lame like that. If you find yourself living vicariously through characters on TV then that can't be healthy. Sometimes I feel like throwing my TV in the garbage but then I couldn't watch movies. But I agree that TV has the capability of removing its viewer from reality to a point where it's just not healthy. I get depressed if I watch too much network TV.

I too love video games. TV sucks...it is waking sleep. Video games do give the brain a workout, though. I also love fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking which are all much more fun and healthy than TV.

So will sitting in front of a TV(or PC monitor) for too long, damage from inactivity. I don't really see where video games are any less harmful, i realize this probably will not be a popular position here as i realize a lot of people are totally strung out on their addictive nature, totally immersed and hypnotized by them as their lives slip by unnotice and unlived....

maybe a back back from sitting in a bad position or loss of muscle mass if you really sit still the whole day.
but alcohol destroys your brain and body and that's way worse imo

This reminds me of something I was thinking about the other day. I was thinking about how everybody likes drama and has to get it from some outlet. Most people these days get their fill of drama from TV. People who don't watch TV, maybe get their drama from internet forums for instance.   Each generation before us got their emotional fill from either TV or radio or books or live theater, etc. If you keep going back in time people got their drama from somewhere.

So what would happen if, there were no "artificial" source of emotional fulfillment? What if there was no internet, radio, TV, books, magazines, or theater? I think human interactions would become much more "real" in the sense that people could no longer hold back their emotions because they'd have to have constant outlets in real life situations, rather than getting them out of some fictional story in the comfort of your home. In a sense social interactions would be much more intense and dramatic themselves. I dunno I thought that was kinda interesting to consider.

TV is the spawn of evil forces. Humanity before TV is far different that after TV.

television is just another thing. Like millions of things, like everything, it has the potential for postive or negative use. like drugs, it can be a worthwhile experience, an educational one, or it can be a form of escapism and an addiction.

same with eating, same with sex, same with drugs, same with travel, same with sleeping.... etc etc etc

Well I grew up with TV from the 1970'2 and I can tell you that many of today's problems in society are a direct result from years of negative TV programs.

Before the 1950's life in America was not as violent and sick as it is today.

as soon as people started fucking on 8 pm public TV we had huge STD's running around etc..........

I could go into a huge debate here. But I truly believe that TV has been very very bad for Humanity.

I would get a "real life" if I knew what one was.

I propose we all turn off our monitors starting NOW! *zzzzt-pop!*

I haven't watched it in like 2 years, besides very occassional glances at what others are watching

TV forces you to share the mindset that the producers intended for the footage.

It creates a totally illusional abstract of the world, of human society, that is not only completed unfounded by personal experience, but also dangerous to 'collective peace' (outside illusional seperations of countries, languages, ect)

Seriously, I urge everyone to stop for atleast 2 months and see what they are missing

Depends what you use the internet for.

Constantly reading FOXnews.com is the same as watching it.
