By gaining perspective. The shadow self takes over when you are so engrossed in your own existance, so obscured by your own thoughts, so blinded by your own interpretational perceptions, that you forget your self and because of that, also forget others. The mind is wild and wily. For me, the practice of shamatha gave me perspective. It made me recognise thoughts, before they could fix my attention and distract me from what is really going on in the moment. Have compassion, especially for yourself.
Find the skylike nature of mind. The mind is like the sky, yet it is obscured by the clouds of thought. Now if you would go beyond the clouds, you would find an infinite sky, and the sun shining.

Personally, the combination of a summer of tripping, a selection of psychological gems (the 5 ego states, the differences between the thought processes and ideals of men and women, etc), and a hearty desire to not be a stressed out, officious psycho monster at work did it for me. I also think age gives one a tremendous perspective on one's shadow demons.

Did you just dump ice down my pants gomp? Hey Lunar, it's easy. Watch; At age 36 my shadow self has easily committed all of the crimes of being human listed in the above. My shadow gives the world its apologise. Anyone who says or think sthey havn't needs this done to them because I would doubt they are breathing or human. Alas , aspiring to be more then merely human, we must continue to face and integrate the shadow self? How? Be your own source of light and you will no longer create a shadow of yourself. If you follow the light, your shadow will follow too. Pssssssssssst, swamis club is made of goose down feathers! PILLOW FIGHT!
