I think donovan is great as well. He seems to get criticism now that he's dated. But to me his music is timeless

Joni Mitchell
Hot Tuna (acoustic spin-off of the Jefferson Airplane)
tom paxton

also worth checking out:
Bert Jansch (british folk)
Nick Drake
Leo Kottke
Greg Brown - Further In

I don't know if you'd classify the Mountain Goats as folk, but they're usually just one guy with an acoustic guitar and excellent lyrics..

The Band have some very folky moments
The Waifs are a folk-rock band (more folk than rock)
Ani DiFranco
James Taylor? I haven't listened to him extensively, but what I've heard is good
I second the Byrds
Peter, Paul and Mary
John Butler Trio are a more modern, uptempo band but very acoustic based and with some socially-minded lyrics so they probably classify as some kind of modern folk. Get their older stuff.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Definitely Nick Drake. One of the most underrated musicians of this century.

James Taylor is great, so is Joni Mitchell.

Some good recommendations above me

More modern folk-- check out Ben Harper (especially "Fight For Your Mind")

well for that great old folk sound, nobody really beats Woodie Guthrie. For modern musicians that sort-of fall into a "folk" category - Rufus Wainwright, Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, The Kings of Convenience - that's about all I can think of right now...

i hate to be the only one to say it, but what about the freakin dead, man? true, they have many influences, but some of their early albums (workingmans dead, american beauty) are brilliant folk-based albums. if you're into young or hot tuna and the likes, you'll dig em.

Is it modern folk?? I find that I don't appreciate modern folk as much as older stuff. I dunno... there hasn't been a "new" artist that has absolutley blown me away like Dylan, or CSN, or Cohen, etc.

It was all that acid, I swear it was.

if neutral milk hotels "in the earoplane over the sea" was released in the sixties (and it would fit right in with those other acid-folk guys), it would be rememberd as the greatest album ever recorded, but it's a 90's indie release and most will never hear it, stop what your doing, and go get it now.

Elliot Smith was one of the greatest folk/rock musicians of all time man. He has all the best things about folk artists rolled into one.

Bob Dylans voice sucks but his lyrics are good (world wide fact).

Elliot Smith's lyrics are awsome, and his voice is awsome.

nick drake has some great songs. i like the home made tape recorder ones. his cover of 'don't think twice it's alright' is very good. 'been smokin' too long' and 'milk and honey' are also really good.

i like western-sounding folk music that's kinda dark and almost foreboding. rolling fingerpicked guitar riffs that sound almost like banjo are good. any recomendations?
