Folk music
    #3444561 - 12/04/04 04:38 AM (12 years, 8 days ago)

I'm starting to get more into folk music, and could use some suggestions. Old or new, doesn't matter. I haven't heard much of the new stuff. Any good acoustic guitar or folk-influenced music will do as well. Some of my current favorites are Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Peter Paul and Mary. What do you recommend?

Cat Stevens!! Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Ani Difranco, Gilian Welch, Greg Brown, Dar Williams, Indigo Girls, Richard Shindell, Mason Jennings, Richard Buckner, David Gray..you have a good base already with the three you mentioned. Cat Stevens is essential.

I think Elliott Smith is one of the greatest, if not the greatest song-writer of the 90's.

Download these songs:

"Alameda"
"Between The Bars"
"Ballad of Big Nothing"
"Roman Candle"
"Needle In The Hay"
"The White Lady Loves You More"
"No Name #1"
"Alphabet Town"
"Somebody That I Used To Know"
"Miss Misery"
"Independance Day"

Roman Candle and Elliott Smith are probably his "folkiest" albums. Everything after that is not as sparse, much more arrangements. Especially after he signed on with Dreamworks.

i second teh elliot smith plug... he is great..

though this man plays with an electric guitar a lot, his vocal style and music ensamble is VERY folk driven, but only on his newest album (im talking about Ben Kweller "On My Way")

his firts album is pretty good also, but its nothing like his newest bit.

also, try out the new amsterdams for a more polished feel of a folk driven sound.

as far as actual "folk" artists go i think i only got Elliot Smith ...

Van Morrison is Good, OH

and the BEST BY FAR folk music of the recent era, would have to be "the Moldy Peaches" just go buy them right now.

peace

Nick Drake - Folk singer from the '70's who couldn't handle himself and eventually commited suicide. His music is some of the most underrated, creative, melodic folk music I've heard.

David Gray
some Ben Harper (Fight For Your Mind)
Martin Sexton
Jack Johnson, Donovan Frankenreiter
Joni Mitchell
