I don't think so ... grind, strain, and grind some more

Also, Brown Rice Flour is really easy to find if you are in a decent sized town.  I'm sure every health food store will have it... they all do here.

Good Luck!

Whoa whoa.. You want to use brown rice flour. I have found consistently that finer ground rice does MUCH better and results in stronger mushies. All you need to do is get a blender and grind like ~1 cup at a time, grind the shit out of it. The finer the better, and it only takes like 5 minutes to do enough for a lot of jars. But yea, find one of those hippie organic/health shops that have bulk everything and if you still don't wanna take that 5 minutes, you can buy the flour too, but I am a believer that fresh flour is better.

Yeah, I live in a small ass town, couldnt find flour ANYWHERE.  The closest city that would have some is like 60 miles away.  So I bought the rice, and splurged on a coffee grinder.  Besides, I like coffe too, and its better by the bean, killing 2 birds with one stone.  By the way, coffee grinders are cheap.

What is the best substrate to use for casing in terms of ease of spreading the substrate layer and yields in the absence of a pressure cooker?

I went to the grocery store, found the organic brown rice. THen put it in my coffee grinder. Works like a charm. If you use flour that isn't fresh you're losing a lot of the nutrients that the rice provides.
