Brown Rice Flour?

Hey, I was wondering if anybody else had any experience using ground brown rice rather than the flour? On half the jars I inoculated using the ground brown rice, there's a weird flourescent yellow contamination of the flour (probably my fault). The other half, though, seem to have like a cobweb mold growing on them... but when I look closer it just looks like a very very spread out mycelia.. is this because the brown rice causes the mycelia to grow so fast that it can't catch up with itself to make a more hearty white? Or is that actually just cobweb mold? I really don't see any signs of anything but this stuff growing, and it's growing at the four inoculation holes... Really I was jsut wondering what other people's experience with grinding up brown rice flour was. anybody?

The white stuff you describe sounds like what you want. Have you grown mushrooms before? I'm still on the brf mostly except for using some rye flour(which seems to work wonders) the quart jar tek posted here on the teks page works wonders too. I think the whole grain rice colonizes faster myself. I have noticed mycelium does a "display" or thats what I've seen it called that sounds like what your talking about. Let them grow, sooner or later if you follow the directions you've read, mushrooms will appear, and if not you will know what the bad stuff looks like.

Yeah, every other time I'ved used just brown rice flour; the difference is that the rhizomes would come only after the really bright white stuff had already formed. This one, I'd already found three jars of flourescent yellow junk and so was just expecting the rest to be contaminated, found the very grey-ish (hopefully) mycellium in the other jars and figured it must be cobweb mold... in one jar, the spores got stuck in the syringe needle and i was pressing hard and about 1 1/2 cc's squirted out into one injection site; that, combined with the brown rice I think was what caused the mycelium to just about explode in the jar... thanks for responding.. all we need is encouragement, huh?
