Kenneth Square, PA

I was told by someone last year that Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania used be be a huge magic mushroom growing spot for the government. After they stopped the testing, the shrooms kept growing. After looking around here a little bit I've noticed that most people say there are almost no wild shrooms in PA. Is what I heard about Kenneth Square the truth?

No idea, never heard of it. I'll do some google research and see what I can dig. Nothing was yielded from my extra professional google scan. I do not know, but it damn sure would be interesting if it were true.

I would think so but my health teacher told me about it, believe it or not. I looked it up too and didn't find anything, but I'm still not sure about it. I'm still wondering to this day why she told us about it anyway.

I have been in that area picking mushrooms before. It is not that far from me via car ride. I have never found any species of psilocybe up there other than coprophila (but this is in very limited searching). Some species of gymnopilus can be found in PA. Subbs as well. There are many commercial edible grow farms in PA of Agaricus bisporus (i think). I remember the smell of being among the mushroom farms vividly.

Another interesting thing to add,

The state of Pennsylvania produces about 50% of the fresh mushrooms sold in the United States, with most of that production occurring in the southeast corner of the state.

I'm pretty close to there too and was hoping that it might be a spot I could pick them. I guess not though, back to the drawing board.

I'm sure that you would be able to find something up there. With some persistence you might be able to find gyms. The season for pan subbs is pretty much over but you could search for a spot to check during the spring.

As a former Philadelphian, I am quite familiar with Kennett Square, PA. It's a great little town, and they are known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World", as most of the commercial mushroms in the US come from Kennett Square and Chester County.
Also they host a yearly Mushroom Festival. The whole town gets involved, it's a blast. They also have a great little Mushroom Museum, it may have closed down recently, where you can buy anything from fresh/dried mushrooms, field guides, mushroom ties, mushroom jewelry, cookbooks, etc., and a mushroom restaurant.
I always used to take out-of-towners there for the day after visiting Longwood Gardens, which is just down the road.
That area is dotted with state parks, (Ridley, Marsh Creek, French Creek, etc.) and I would gather pounds and pounds of an amazing variety of mushrooms for my dinner table. I'm not really interested in "active" mushrooms, just the edibles, but I would often come across some gyms as well.
Oh, as far as Kennett Sq. being a former "huge magic mushroom growing spot for the government", I'm 99.999% sure that is totally bogus. It doesn't even qualify as an urban legend.

Sounds nice down there. I'm thinking now that I might have taken what she said the wrong way. We were talking about drugs and she mentioned that it was the "Mushroom capital of the world". I do clearly remeber her saying the stuff about the government testing, but I guess she just wanted to have a little fun confusing us. By the way, French Creek and Marsh Creek are great, I go to them about 4 times a week now. Frisbee golf at French Creek . And its only like 5 minutes away from my house.
