Bulk colonization slowed down.
    #3310609 - 11/02/04 07:22 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hey, a Friend of a Friend's has a little bulk setup going of 50% straw, and 50% horse manure, and it was spawned with a 1:5 PF cake:bulk mix 8 days ago. IT colonized very quickly and vigorously until around day 5 or 6 and it hardly hsows any signs of further colonization. The top is about 90% covered. The Friend of a Friend's thinks that it got to dry, cuz she didn't put the plastic sheet on very tightly and there were air gaps between the plastic sheet and the mix. Also it looks dryer now. What Can she do? She was thinking of lifting the plastic sheet and spraying the top with water/peroxide solution, and then letting it further incubate. Antoehr idea was to apply the casing layer on to it now. A sterile casing layer of vermiculite mind you, and then moistening that, and hopefully the underlying substrate could get the water from that and finish colonizing and hten begin to colonize the vermiculite.

Any opinions? She wants to beat the 10 day deadline when straw and manure supposedly spontaneously contam.

Randall Rhoads-I say little, becasue she is only using 3 pf cakes in it. WIth the 1:5 ratio, i think it gives you an idea of the size. IT is nothgin close to the huge tubs that are the usual bulk grors. PErlite? What is your idea behind this?

Vaka- if no other insightful replies i will tell her to go ahead and do this. Thanks.

its been my experience with bulk that on about or around day 7 to day 9 substrate temperature can shoot upward
make shure the substate itself isnt over 86 F, high temps will slow
growth big time myc will die at 105-106

okay well yes i have witnessed the fact that high temps slow mycelium growth but actually 84-86 will increase it and no 105 will not kill it my incuabtor actaull hit 108 cause someone bumped the heater and the mycelium is still growing well when brought back to normal temps anyway i would say get the substrate off the bottom of the tub ( grate or something) and cover the bottom in perlite with water in the bottom and maybe also find a way to dunk this in a tub or something to bring back the moisture level needed then spray the crap out of it everyday and hope for the best if you put a casing layer on top and keep that moist it will colonize that and nothing else more than you have allready so yeah that won't work

but good luck i hope this helped

pictures would be great if possible thanks
