GROWBAGS do NOT colonize slow
    #2040210 - 10/24/03 03:52 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I see so many posts of poeple complaining about colonization time with regards to growbags...put down the joint, tea, sober up and listen....

My mate used to grow over in the UK and would use these things by the masses. Sometimes his whole boot would be filled to the timmy. Anyway, I watched him doit a few times, so I figured that I would help you PsycoHeads out...

First, when you get the back, it is very condenssed and packed in there. You need to spend several minutes breaking up the subtrate. You may feel like you are going to break the bag, but you won't. WOrk the subrate really good, until the entire bag is open and the grains can move around freely and are completely loose. This will take several minutes as it is very condenssed.

Next, go through your regular procedures of steral injection. 2cc's is perfect. You know the rest, and if you did it right, with optimal conditions you will have a full colonized bag within 7-10 days.

Also, many people use these tubs with water and heaters and all of this extra shit...put it in a shoe box and throw it in your garage or closet and leave it alone. Good luck....

Yeah -- if you mix it up it'll colonize a lot faster, and you can get a lot more per bag than per jar in a given time.

It depends on the strain and substrate.

Bags can take a very long time.

A newbie will often have faster colonization in 1/2 pint jars simply because they are smaller.

you have to have the temp right for the specific species, do not listen to hyjinx, the temp must be appropriate, (garage!!!!) way too fuckin cold

The reason the spawn bags take so long is because they are bigger than jars!!!
And they do take long!!!

no they dont.
if you do everything properly, and leave the spore innoc alone ( culture or even myc syringe ), a bag will be colonized in slightly more than 2 weeks- im talking about making your own though..

edit: this is because you can SHAKE everything in the bag- it doesnt matter that its bigger. stupid jars ( the kind im assuming youre talking about ) cannot be shaken, unless, of course, theyre half-full quart jars and such, but those are wasteful with space

Hmmm... it depends on what you are spawning.

A bag of bulk substrate will spawn quickly.

Substrate and verm, colonized as a cake, can colonize more slowly.

Most newbies don't mash their bags enough this causes slow colonization. Also, newbies tend to innoculate the middle of their bags.

On average, a newbie will have quicker success with the PF tek. 7-10 days is very fast for a grain and verm mycobag to colonize fully without perfect conditions.

Many bags don't even show signs of growth by then.

Still, you need to mush the bags a lot more than you think you should. Most noobies tend to baby their bags. They don't need to be coddled.

If the substrate is shakable, it can spread myc quickly but it will dry more rapidly as well.

If you are incubating your bags, it is probably better to keep them a little condensed... like potting soil.

imo either stick to pf, or get into it more w/ agar and bags- few things will beat agar > grain mycobag in efficiency ( cant think of anything right now.. straw may, but its not used as a spawning substrate v often, is it?.. )
