Whats better for grandmas small space??? A 400Watt HPS or a 250Watt HPS???
    #3301220 - 10/31/04 02:12 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

OK, Grandma is VERY close to having her dreams come true, but I need some questions answered.

I have noticed that many of the local hydro shops dont even stock 250WattHPS lights and ballasts, and not only that, the 400 watt lights and ballasts (complete kits) cost LESS then the 250 Watt kits.

Well what about power usage, I was told a 1000Watt only raises the bill by 20$ and that a 250watt bulb would run about 12$ (canadian dollars)

Grandma want to grow in a small space, what you here (overgrow.com)call a cab grow, she wants a cab thats about 5'11 in heioght (which is her height) and about 3 feet wide a deep.
(YOU KNOW, a BASIC CAB, that could fit a rubbermaid style tub , air pump etc snugly.....................she plans on 4 plants grown in 4 inch net pots that are filled with hydrotron)

A 400Watt HPS in a tight space?????????
WHOULD THIS CREATE HEAT ISSUES???????

With proper ventilation the "hydro guys" are telling me that I would have no problems with a 250Watt HPS, EVEN A 400.

I really dont want my first indoor to fail, I have the veg chamber down, I dont need any help there, but I am really stuck at this fork in the road, I finally have the cash , time etc etc, and I am frezing up, 250watt or 400watt HPS, which light should I get????????

From what I know of it, it's recommended to aim for 50W per square foot. So if your base is 3'X3' then that's 9 square feet. 250/9 = 27.7
400/9 = 44.4

As for power usage, that is dependent on the cost of electricity per kW hour. You would have to check your bill to find this. If you had a 1000W on 18/6 light cycle at 11cents per kW hr that would be $59.40 a month more than your base bill.

I suggest going back to overgrow and doing a search on "c13". This will bring up plenty of reading regarding your basic situation, and I am confident it will be just what you want.

Hope this helps at least a little. Cheers!

A Mill's Pride C-13 from Home Depot fits a 250W fine but would be very hard to keep cool with a 400W.

For ventilation you could get a Dayton 265 cfm blower or some sort of inline fan that uses an impeller.

Its best to leave this to the guys at overgrow.com but you will want around 70-80w/ft for hydro. insidesun.com is the cheapest reliable source i know of for growlights. For the c-13 run a 250 but home depot makes larger cabs that would fit 400-600w lights also. For a 400w keep it around 2x3 and for a 600 around 3x3 http://overgrow.com/edge/showthread.php?...923#post3695923

is it cold in vancouver yet? go with the 400w..you're gonna need that intensity if you're doing hydro in that big of an area and you'll probably end up wanting to buy one later on anyways.

with a lifetime warranty on the ballast. Hope it helps!!
