Minimal Peyote areole graft (update)
    #3255355 - 10/20/04 09:07 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

(My original post got wiped in the Big Oopsie. Here is a new, improved version for your education and enjoyment, including  re-enactment photos of the actual procedure)

Last summer, inspired by this post by Una I decided to try my own areole graft.

Una used a rather large piece of cactus, judging from the pictures. I wondered if it would be possible to take just a small disc of tissue containing the areole to make the graft. This would make it possible to produce a clone while doing minimal damage to the motherplant.

To take the tissue sample I used a new, clean 4mm hole punch.

The tool used for the operation.

I placed the punch over the areole and pushed the tool into the flesh of the cactus. A slight twisting motion helps the cutting action without bruising the plant, much like coring an apple.

When the tool was deep enough (about 6mm ), moving the tool at an angle cut/broke out the tissue sample.

resulting in a core ready for grafting.

A sterilised razor blade was used to make a clean cut on the bottom of the sample.

The sample was placed on a fleshly cut rootstock (here a Myrtillocactus Geometrizans was used) and fixed in place with a piece of sponge  and some tape.

After a week, the tape was removed and the graft looked like this:
(Picture taken on August 28)

Five weeks later (October 7) some swelling, but no action.

October 14. We have ignition! A new growpoint is born.

October 19. Still growing.

But what happened to the motherplant?

The wound is healing nicely...

...and late september, she even produced a big flower.

So, the motherplant is doing fine and the clone is developing quickly, I would have to call this experiment a complete success.

Update: november 2 2004

the graft is in good health and growing like a young graft should; very quickly.

How old was the button before you took the cutting? Did you take out a chunk of the core?

I have had this cactus for four or five years, but it was fairly big when I bought it, so my guess is that the button is about ten years old.

I flattened the bottom of the scion, so it's just a flat graft, as you would do with a pup or a seedling.

How the pup doing now? When you made the graft was the cactus put into a high humidity environment or the foam kept up the humidity?

Nice work bro  Was it very difficult to get the core ring of the stock lined up with the spot of meristematic tissue from the areole? Any updates on progress?

Wow...great experiment. I got a myrtillo waiting to be a rootstock...gotta get the balls to chunk away. Hmmm...hole punch

Very inspiring.

Gr0wer: I've posted an update to show progress of the pup, and it's doing great. I did nothing special to keep humidity up, other than watering the rootstock. Don't read too much into that, as most of north-western Europe has become one big high humidity environment this year.

zee_werp: It was actually easier than grafting a pup, because the active region of the areole was fairly large relative to the small size of the tissue sample.

Cool. Think I'm gonna try one of these when my current graft gets big enough to be able to handle it. A question about your cutting device - you say its a hole punch, but the hole punches that I am used are the ones for paper that usually have two pieces that sandwich together to push a section of paper out. What is this one? Is it for paper also? Where would I likely be able to find one, and if I couldn't find one, do you think a sharpened piece of metal tubing would work?

edit: just noticed the update pick....its crankin!!!

I'm not a native speaker, so I may have used the wrong word. it's a tool you use when you want to make a new hole in a leather belt, or to make holes in a piece of canvas before you put eyelets into them. basically it's a sharpened tube with a solid handle. You place the thing on your material and hit it with a hammer, producing a clean hole. (of course you don't hit it with a hammer when using it on a cactus. You just push it in.) You should be able to get one in a hardware store.

Yes, I think that you could make a suitable tool from a metal tube. It's something I considered doing before I realized that I already had the perfect solution laying around in my toolbox.

Im sure you could make your own tool with a sharpened section of thin wall pipe. But if you can get a leather pucnh im sure it would save the hastle.

It's behind a south facing window. We haven't had much sun around here lately, and winter is approaching. I'm confident it will start to look better next growing season.

Looks a bit deformed but i guess with time it should straighten out no? Thats cool how the rootstock gives it so much energy that chloroyhpyll isnt produced much right away, or are they in a shady spot?
