Dude those are almost scary! How old is the graft in that first pic, the giant one? You must be doing something right... Thanks for sharing!

Is it confirmed whether or not the peyote grows with a proportional alkaloid content on the perkopsikisis?

well, you could always cut it off and let it root its own roots once it reaches a large size.

It was discribed to me that, the amount of alkaloids in the cactus is more dependent on the water content of the cacti. If you eat peyote in the summer it will likly be less potent than one in the winter, as it doesnt drink as much then. Perkopsis pumps tons of water into the cacti so their is a chance its less potent.
Mitchnast also made a good point.
Tho I have wanted to cut my graft off leaving one inch of perkopsis at the bottom, Then root this. That way you wll have perkopsis roots growing and the peyote can push out its own roots over time. No real loss in growth and it looks natural, with fast growth.
Got that idea from over at the Nook.

This may be a stupid question, but what are the benifits of grafting peyote with these other species?

Peyote would take about 5-8 years to get the size of the peyote in that first pic. Well, that peyote you see on that pereskiopsis prolly got that big in a year give or take a few months.

I have a 6 year old seed grown Lopho and it is the size of one of the pups on my biggest graft.(Including the root) I graft because its impossible to find these cacti in canada, so this is the most realistic way to get a collection going.

a peyote would grow slower if the pereskiopsis did not have leaves exposed to the sun, but still, its faster with just the rootstock. theres really no reason to allow the peyote to have peyote roots unless youre some kind of purist. well, that and a button can be removed from peyote roots and it will sprout new peyote buttons. wheras a pereskiopsis will only pup peyotes if its highest areole is a peyote areole.
a peyote with pereskiopsis roots will invariably have a higher concentration of water and grow more elongate, but a dry period, as with all cacti, will result in a shrivel and dormant stage.
If you dont sleep your grafted peyotes in the winter, and dont use strong lights, then you get long reachy peyotes that are stressed and prone to illness.

Damn! This year I will try this trick also. I have 4-5 small peyotes for 2 years now. But they grow too too slow. I've seen some grafting methods before but I want to ask you i cut the peyotes exactly from the point where the root starts? The earth level? 2. How long do I have to keep those ziplocks on them? Thank you very muuch in advance.

3. Can someone spell the "perkopsikisis" the right way? I would like to search for it in my country. I found some perkopsis. Is this the one? Thanks again

pereskiopsis
Ebay is alright.. but just try searching on here or other Etheno sites.. People are more than happy to trade if u send first.
I only keep my humidity dome over teh graft for 5-7 days. then I give it generous sprays threw out the day. whenever I can.. usualy 2-3 times a day.
And it doesnt matter where you cut the peyote, all you need is an areol to get growth.. It can also be the root of the plant. It will just split open and grow from the inside out.

That's great!
Is there any better strain of pereskiopsis for grafting? Thanks again
