Patch and .. incubate, or put in Pod?

These are my two Ecuador casings. I made them at about 3AM on 10/21, so it's been 4 days.

Sorry for not using the normal forums gallery/thumbnails, I don't have any upload bandwidth left for another few hours and I am impatient :tongue:, but I shrank them down a bit..





I marked the visible mycelium in the 1st pic to give you a better idea, it's kinda hard to see in the pic.

Should I lightly patch the visable areas and put into the PMP... or into the fruiting chamber? The first pan is pretty damn even, I think, at least for a first try.. really only that small 2x2" spot in the middle-left is uncolonized, and it's damn close...

Maybe I'll do an experiment, patch the 2nd one, particularly that big splotch in the upper left, and put it back into the incubator. I'll very lightly patch the 1st one in some of the more exposed areas, and put it directly into the Pod.

I was thinking that when I take the 2nd one out of the incubator tomorrow or the next day, I'll cold shock it to slow down the mycelium's momentum.

I suppose two trays isn't a very good way to see which method works best for me, but hell, the only way to learn is by experience, right? :wink:

What do you all think? How would you proceed if your casings looked like mine?

Lightly patch the second one, definatly. I would also patch the spots on the first one. Incubate for 24 then fruit.

Yeah, that's what I decided to do. I poked at the uncolonized areas a little, and they weren't as close as I thought they were, so they'll incubate for another 24hrs.

My suggestion is patch and then just put it in the PMP. They will colonize anyway. Good casing BTW. Good Luck.

I would actually only patch the left hand spot in the second pic. Here is where people get themselves in trouble chasing myc on a perfectly good colonization, when you see an outbreak real early like that second pic thats when you want to lightly patch just enough so you inhibit knotting which of course will keep that spot from pinning early which would result in the energy going into the forming of those mushrooms rather that into the overall pinset, Ya know what I'm saying? You may even want to lightly hit that one area in the first pic as well as that second area in the second pic they're borderline but since your patching why not :wink: Now is where you want that casing at "near saturation" :wink: it can also be placed right into the fruiting chamber/PMP if temps are optimal and no misting until pins are set. GL and happy harvest!
Just one thing by triggering this early we're counting on the myc's vegetative momentum to carry it into all the valleys before the switch to generative growth occurs this is critical timing, if temps are too cool then the myc slows to much before it reaches all the valleys it's the coincidence of the even colonization and the completed transition that creates the best possible flush. Some strains require slightly more colonization of the casing surface before initiating pinning and some rip thru so fast that you need to initiate 2 days after casing before any myc is seen on the surface! :wink: So as you can see you'll need to understand your myc's personal preferences, I've found most people tend to initiate to late for what it's worth. :wink: Again GL

You should put it right into the PMP. Putting it back into the incubator will give you worse timing and more overlay IME. Some strains may require differences (sometimes sooner, sometimes later) but overall, I've found right into the fruiting is best.

Hmm.... Ok... I'll put them into the Pod ASAP.. They will have only been incubated for another ~12 hours(since patching).

My Pod temps are a little on the low side, about 73?F.
