    #3271084 - 10/24/04 10:51 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

hello all, i as you can tell from my info i haven't been a real active member (or a long standing one) on this forum, but i do sign on pretty much every day and read the various threads. all in all i have come to love this site and everything it has to offer. i was hopeing for in ID on these mushrooms i found in my back yard.
found them growing in my Western Massachusetts lawn. (because of my location, i am 99% certain they are not active)
they dont have a peticular scent. i would say its a mushroomy smell but it is not peticulalry pungent.
average size is a 4cm cap, and a 7cm stem. the colors are a purpleish with dull gray/whitish streaks.
i think i will let the pics speak for themselves on the other characteristics as i dont really want to say something stupid that isn't correct.
if other information is wanted/needed just say so and i will do my best. thanks

I wouldn't drink any alcohol with them!

They look like some sort of inky cap to me...although I am not an expert in all the varieties of mushrooms of the world like some on here!

I'd say Coprinus but I'm not expert.

Atratmentarius sounds like a reasonable guess, yes. I don't recommend eating them, for the following reasons:
- You specimens are way past their prime; coprinus mushrooms should be eaten only when the gills are still white
- Coprinus Atramentarius is one of the species that creates a toxic reaction in your body with alcohol. You can't drink alcohol for about a week after eating these.
- Coprinus species don't really taste that good

Still nice find. I found an atramentarius specimen once that weighed more than a pound

Koraks has it, although I disagree about flavor (on Coprinus comatus).

Happy mushrooming!
