What happened to all the new posts?
    #3250938 - 10/19/04 10:57 AM (12 years, 7 days ago)

As an admin it's my job to help insure our data is safe from accidental corruption and deletion. This fact makes it that much harder to admit today I royally screwed up in my duties. While working on a fix for a bug in the BB's polling mechanism, I accidentally deleted all posts beyond recovery. It was a totally stupid, brainless mistake: I had about 20 windows open at once and I clicked 'Drop Table' in the wrong one. Anyway, my best option was to restore the posts from our most recent backup which was taken on 10/13/04. Sadly any posts made since then are permanently gone, although everything else (ratings, private messages, image uploads, etc.) should be intact.

The only thing to do after making a mistake like this is to learn from it, and I have. Backups will now be taken on a daily basis, so we'll never lose more than 24 hours of posts. They'll also be saved in a format which can be imported instantly, so if something like this happens again the board won't be down for hours while we restore. More importantly, I learned to slow down and take my time when messing with the database. I realized I can still make big mistakes even when performing routine tasks, and I should always pay close attention to what I'm doing. I sincerely apologize for the error, especially to those who lost posts, and I promise to be more careful in the future.

On a happier note, during the downtime I was able to get the polls pretty much completely fixed. The problem was due to a bug in the stock BB software and I've submitted a fix to the developer. Duplicate votes should no longer be allowed, and any dupes which were recorded have been removed. So, I did accomplish my goal of fixing the script even though it took about 16 hours longer than planned and resulted in the irreparable loss of data :undecided:.

Anyway, if anybody has questions or comments about what happened, I'll be glad to address them.

Dude, considering how hard you work on this site you should not feel any need to apologize IMO. I mean damn anyone can make a mistake, to err is human afterall

Don't sweat it, we lose a few days, oh well not the end of the world.

Don't feel bad at all bud
