Ok.. I'm thinking about modifying the DB kit.. is ANY of this a good idea.
The container is clear .. not opaque.
1) If I spray-Painted the sides black / wrapped in a Tinfoil + Saran Wrap Layer.. would it be benneficial?
2) Should I put a layer of moist perlite on the bottom.. place the compost + substrate mix in seperate trays on top of this? [ The standard procedure is to just lay the compost & substrate mix in the bottom of the sterile container after swabbing w/ alcohol ]
3) Should I add 50/50 casing mix to the compost ?

Ya my FOAF also get recived his 15lb DP kit. and was plannig on modifying it. Im not sure if it is worth the trouble for him but, he had also planed on putting periite soaked in h2o2 at bottom, than puting a large peice of kevlar fabric type fabric (the kind on trampolines) to to keep the substate off the perilite. I think this might be better that baking pan cuz i can use all my compost, plus since it is black it covers the sides from light.

You could spray the bottom black if you wanted to. But then you miss 1/2 the fun of seeing the whole process. As you can see in most of our pictures, the mushrooms do fruit from the top surface, although somtimes they fruit up the sides, its still not a problem.
there is no need for saran wrap and tin foil.
There is no need for perlite in the bottom. This compost already creates a mini rain forest inside the box.
As for 50/50+ mix, only use it if your using a larger wide open growing setup.
We have already thought of and experimented with all of these things. The kit works great just the way it is. Just leave it alone and follow the instructions and it will work great.
thanks

Ryche ->
Someone private messaged me in regards to this post--here is the quote:
A layer of dry perlite on the btm would help a lot. Some drainage holes in the bottom would help too.
No more than 4 inches of compost should be used since the container is not large enough to handle the air-to-bed ratio required by the speices. And some additional exhaust holes along the top would improve the ventilation. I would even add an air bubbler to it so you can improve the excessive humidity, heat and co2 that is radiating from the substrate.
Good luck!!
------------------
What are your opinions ?
If I were to do those mods ... I would but a 1 - 1.5" layer of perlite on bottom... place 1 tray cut to the dimension of the kit container & fill w/ 4" of substrate.. cut a hole half way up one of the sides of the container & run an air hose attatched to a filtered fish tank pump to blow air over the shrooms..
The other way is to have 2 trays in there [ to grow 2 diff species ] and fill w/ either 7.5lbs or 4" of compost?
Is this all nonsense?

Actually I have had alot of trouble with those litttle fuckers that fruit on the sides. They form in abundance down there and expect me to ruin the whole compost cake to get to them. In the future I will ALWAYS tape the sides and try to make them as light resistant as possible.
