Faget Dies

Pioneering spacecraft  design engineer Maxime Faget has died at the age of 83. Faget is credited for conceiving Project Mercury, which put the first U.S. astronauts into space, and was involved in the design of every U.S. manned spacecraft afterward.

Faget, who was born in British Honduras, joined a space task group in 1958, which later evolved into NASA's  Johnson Space Center in Houston.

He led the initial design team that studied the possibility of a manned flight to the moon, designed and patented the emergency escape towers used on launch pads, and was involved in the design of the space shuttle.

Faget retired from NASA in 1981 after seeing the first successful launches of the shuttle. He later helped to found Space Industries, one of the first private space firms.
