Quick Temp. Gauge Question

My temp. guage displays both the inside and the outside tempurature. The guage has a long wire with a sensor at the end that can be stuck to an outside window for the outside temp. Right now I have a piece of tape over the sensor. In my incubator, the inside temp reads 85.6, but the outside temp. reads 92.1. Why is there such a disrepancy? Is it because there is something covering the sensor and making it seem hotter or is my guage a POS?

Doesn't sound too promising...can you take the tape off?
Is one probe closer to the heat source?

My digital indoor/outdoor thermometer is the same way.
With mine, the external thermistor is the accurate one(As compared to my Caliber II thermometer/hygrometer). Not exactly sure why that is.....
I like to tape the bare thermistor right against the side of the jars. This gives you a more accurate reading with less fluctuation than reading the air temperature.

Yes I can take the take off...And yes..the gauge itself is placed on the top of the last jar and the wire itself hangs down and is probably 2 inches from the heating pad.

Also...I'm trying the salt calibration technique...and the guage has been in a sealed container with salt for about 20 mins now, but it says the humidity is only at 53% right now and it should be at 75%.

Give it time. It needs to be in there for at least 6 hours for everything to equalize.
My Caliber II read exactly 75% after a good nights sleep.

I took the tape off and now they're both at the same temp. But what about this humidity problem?

If no one knows, can someone at least recommend a reliable hygrometer?

Ummm...is it the Acurite brand? Well, if it is remember that where it says OUT is the little sensor wire. Also, unless you have the whole thing inside the incubator youre not gonna be able to read the RH with the OUT sensor only the INSIDE sensor reads RH. I suggest putting the whole thing in there on top of the jars on one end and putting the OUT sensor on the other end or between the tubs to see the temperature there. Oh, just outta curiosity why would you wanna know the RH inside a incubator? Good Luck.

Yes, it's the Acurite one--exactly. I don't want to know the RH inside the incubator. I removed the guage from the incubator about 20 minutes ago because I decided I wanted to calibrate the RH meter so it would be all set when I was ready to put it in my terrarium. And it's been at 53% RH for like 35 minutes.

Well if you wanna test it out breathe on the bottom of the gauge thing itself by the LIGHT button and with your warm breath it should go up. I think when its 100% RH it will say high. Anyway, if you wanna be more precise youre gonna have to put the whole thing inside a sealed container with salt or whatever. Maybe a quart sized jar. Sounds about right for being inside a incubator.

after trying prob. three or four different temp./hum. gauges i got the best one ever, a western digital. it can have up to three wireless remote sensors that have both temp. and hum. and you can monitor all three from a separate base sensor, it also has a min/max function that allows you to see if you area is getting too hot or too cold. i got mine at target.

Hmm..How much? If by tomorrow morning my guage doesnt register 75% RH (or very close to it) then I'll go get one.

Try wrapping the meter(I believe the humidity sensor is on the unit only, and not on the remote temp senor) in a very hot towel. Should read around 95% RH after 60 seconds.

Sam, after about a minute the temp. guage read HI. So it worked. I think the salt thing is bogus or takes a LONG time to work.

i think it was like 29.99 or 39 for the base station and one remote sensor, i havent bought any other remotes but i think i saw them on the web for 30 a piece, i know its kinda more than one would want to spend, but considering how important temps are to growing things... i found its worth it to buy better gear from the start so you dont waste money buying tons of different shity pieces of equipment. western digi should give me free shit for talking so good about them. just so you know i found these kind of gagues at one target and not another across town??? i think each target buys different stuff, also its easier to find these kind of things in the spring, so the web might be easier, dont buy them used. peace 00

That's good to hear, MoneyAddict. You should read the instructions one more time, though. I'm pretty sure it's HIGH when over 80%. I think the best way to gage a humid pod is to open the pod and then stick your arm in there really fast. It should feel moist. It's like right before it rains. You'll be able to gage the humidity fairly well after a bit of practice.

Psychrometer is all I use anymore I even use it to calibrate hygrometers. Some people say you don't need hygrometers or whatever well they just don't have a clue whats going on (FACT!) Some people can always use them period. BTW I have three psychrometers (not sling) and paid under $25 for each of them. GL
