my cakes need help
    #322572 - 05/21/01 03:57 PM (24 years, 29 days ago)

so i posted a couple of days ago about cakes taking a LONG time to colonize. One set 19 days and the other set 25 days. They are about 92% colonized. The older set is colonizing at room temp in a box. The other one in the terriaum at 80 deg and about 85 humd. Well today birthed one(25 days out) to see how it smelled and I cut it open. It was not colonized all the way through just the outside layer was colonized. Also it didn't smell quite as sweet as it should. The mycel is white but not bright white. What should I do? If you haven't read one of my post before...
I live in a very dry and hot environment. Are my jars drying or dying? Is there any thing I can do to save my other jars? I looked for a cool mist humd yesterday but couldn't find one under 100 bucks!

Your help is appreciated

If your jars are taking that long to colonize, it sounds like they are drying out. How are you incubating them? Using the aquarium heater and a couple of rubbermaid conatainers will give you a warm, humid environment. Your jars will colonize faster and stay moist.

one set of jars are in my terriaum 80 degrees and about 85 % humd. and the other set is in my closet at room temp about 82 degrees. Do you have any suggestions on birthing them or dunking them? Should I just leave them be. I am afraid if they stay how they are they will be toast when I do birth them.

Thanks
