Cutting pedro pups
    #3194366 - 09/29/04 01:46 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

What do I do ? Just cut the pup and plant it in cactus soil? Its spring here possibly the best time to plant.

I want to take it off and see if more grow this spring.
Any advice?

It's fun to see how they do in different places and observe the results, do what feels right! I'd let it enjoy the spring light then when the summer sun comes along cut it and give it some shade

Short pups take FOREVER to grow, they have so little photosynthetic tissue that it takes them a long time to develop a good sized root system. leave the pup on for another year and take it off to callous before growth starts next year. It's already attached to a good root system now so it should be about 12" or so by next year. I have a couple 6" tall cuttings that I took 3 yrs ago as well as three 12" cuttings from the same plant 2 yrs ago. the 6" cuttings should be about where the 12" cuttings are in another year. So by waiting for them to grow an extra 6" I could have sped up their growth rate by 2 full years. I hope that helps.

i believe we lose a little time when we cut the plants, until they set the roots and everything back...

if you cut, make sure you wait 2-3 weeks before planting or it will rot.
beautiful plant... don't cut it!

I would cut the big one and allow that to calus then root over winter. By spring youd have minimal downtime and 2 seperate plants and the pus has a huge root system. Leave a few inches of a stump for the pup and future pups.
