Forcing pedro pups
    #729134 - 07/07/02 01:37 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Is there any way to force the pedros to sprout pups (without planting more cuttings). I have three pups along the rest of my larger stalks but they came on their own. How can I force it to make more or can you not fuck with mother nature like that?

High nitrogen throws out many pups in cacti....

do you do that by just feeding it a ton of high nitrogen fertilizer?

hey psilocybe, thanks for the advice. Could you explain why it is that that works or you just know that it does? Why would a cup on top do that? Why would drilling do that? Thanks for any replies.

that makes sense but what about when you make a cutting....the top just closes up and continues to grow?

when you top the cactus, it callouses over and gets a hard light brown covering after several days to several weeks. New Growth comes off the cactus that is left, the point where you topped it will never grown taller again, just sprout pups on it's body where new growth can occur, apical meristem. So when you top the cactus, the original cactus iwll never grow taller or fatter, just sprout pups.

so if i cut my cactus down to three feet then three feet is where it will stay? Maybe I am a fucking idiot but i am not getting what you are saying. Can you explain like "cactus growing for dummies". Do the pups start from the now calloused top or from its root system?

Both. And it varies. Sometimes you can get a nice phat solid single growth off the flat top but usually its a few pups. You can get the feel of how they grow if you get yourself a few of them and experiment a little. It really isn't that complex. If you have one though that is over three feet tall, I?d leave the muther and find me another one to dice up if that?s what you gotta do. Assuming the plant ain?t like gold in your area and you are in deep need of trippin that is. Cause the chances of it forming a nice phat single growth and continuing with columnar symmetry is slim.

Thanks leaf. I guess I fucked up then. I had four beautiful five foot mothers and have cut two of them already. I will leave the other two alone to grow for a while. The two I cut are now at three feet. So I should continue to take my cuttings from them huh? I also have three pups at the bases of the mothers. Is it better to leave them alone or cut them as well (when they are mature enough). Thanks

The cup thing sounds like a good idea.
The reason it *should* work is: As was said before, the growing tip of a plant is called the apical meristem. Important plant chemicals are produced in the apical meristem, called AUXINS. Auxins inhibit (prevent) the growth of branches (pups) and encourage cell elongation (this is what causes plants to bend / grow towards the light, all the auxins are sent to the dark side of the stem causing it to bend towards the light).
Anyway, the important thing in this case is that auxins inhibit branching, and auxins need light to form. So if you cover a cactus tip with a cup, or some dark paper or something it should fool it into thinking it has been topped, so it should produce pups.

High ferts will induce many pups without having to top..I have a p torch thats 2 foot with 5 branches... the risk is if theres to much nitro then the braches will split and or burst....Only fert during the grow season...

thanks psilocybe.....i'll look some more. I had been searching though. I was trying to find some sort of growing guide but all i could find is how to cultivate and water etc. I can't find anything on the science of it all but i'll keep searching. If i have more questions i hope you don't mind a knock on your door :-)

I wouldn?t go so far as to say you fucked up unless of course you were going for a single tall specimen. In fact, in my opinion you?re helping to propagate the species. By having several specimens you?re insuring the survival of the species in your own little way.
