Hello shroom garden community I have several 12-24inch pedro cacti in which started pupping over the summer, one per plant on 7 of my cacti.
the question is, in theory will the pups grow better if i left them to grow or sould I take them as cuttings when they reach a certin size, they are 4-5 inches as of today?
Looking for optimum growth
I will prolly do both just to see for my self but, Id like to here from some green thumbs on this subject
thanx

if you want MORE plants, then you'll be likely to take more cuttings... if you want BIGGER plants, you'll want to let them grow...

They will grow fastest attached to the mother plant for now. The pups will try to "catch up" to the main column and will grow faster than it. Once they are a bit bigger they can root quicker and you can start the cycle over again with MUCH less recovery time. between 14"-18" is really the ideal cutting length. You can still get a foot of growth for the season plus new pups with cuttings this size taken before growth starts. I have also taken 4" cuttings and it took them 2 yrs to reach 12" whereas if I had left them attached it would've only taken 3-4 months. Hope this helps.

If anything take a cutting of the mom if its big enough and that should help speed up the pups maturation.

For now you can leave them attached for optimum growth. If you take them as cuttings then the growth will be stunted for a while when they are rooting and being acclimated to their new growth situation. Once they are well rooted they will grow about 12+ inches per year.
