Cover holes during colonization?
    #3184656 -

I have 10 jars made using PF tek w/verm & rye berry powder mix. They are being colonized now. The jars have 4 holes each in the lids. I've noticed whenever I have a contam problem during colonization, the contaminant is always on top right under the verm layer.

Considering this, I figure contams are getting in through the 4 holes, I always thought there needs to be some sort of air exchange during colonization. Would it be a good/bad idea to put tape over the holes?

tape is ok. i've always been told that they need air exchange too, but hyphae has recently pointed out that a high CO2 level leaves the mycelium in a vegitative state. he doesn't give them fresh air until they're birthed.

you can use tape. go ahead. i'm sure this will help out if you're getting contams through that verm layer...

i had that problem on my first grow. i added a tyvek layer to my procedure and i've had NO contamination so far.

How do you keep contams out? By removing the tape and stabbing through the tyvek during innoculation, wouldnt there by a hole in your tyvek filter, thus allowing contammed air in?

Unless youre talking about pf tek jars. In that case, nevermind. What do you do for grain?!

You put a band-aid over the the innoculation site. They come sterile in the little wraper they come in. You dont use any tape if your using tyvek. Check out magashs' Rye Tek. It has pics and everything of what needs to be done.

Know of any super sticky bandades to be certain no air seeps in? Those circular bandades like you get after shots, do those work well? What do the pros use?

Those are exactly what i use. Nice and small. I've haven't found a need to find any "super sticky" bandaids yet. The regualr yo get in a supermarket work just fine.

High co2 is inevitable in an enclosed jar, what we are talking is allowing gas exchange, which does not mean fresh air it only means certain values need to change. As the myc consumes substrate it generates gases and these need to be released and not allowed to build up. You want to leave the tape off after innoculating your jars it's just easier this way and putting the tape back on is totally redundant anyway. Now your jars are contaming not because of the tape issue they are contaming from most likely improper sterilization of the needle or jars, your top verm layer will stop contams not to mention a layer of foil over the top of your jars is not a bad idea ever!
