The Dextrose Experiment

I recently tried the honey water tek. Instead of using honey i used dextrose. These are my results: Day 1: Added one teaspoon dextrose powder bought from brewing store to 8 ounces of bottled water to a half pint jar. Boiled the jar for 20 minutes and let it cool. Day 2: Injected 2cc's of Cambodian strain spores into the jar. Let it sit. ( this was at 5:30 in the morning )...about 9:00 at night i decided to check on the jar and saw fuzzy mycelium floating around in a couple different places. They weren't that big, about 1/4 inch. They looked like little bread crumbs. Day 3: The mycelium bread crumbs nearly tripled or even four times grew bigger and have colonized lots of the dextrose water!! There were 2 different types of mycelium present...One that looked like cotton and very fluffy looking, and the one looked very ropey ( i guess this was the rhizomorphic growth ). Day 4: At about 6:00pm i checked the jar and it was about half filled with mycelium. It looks like the mycelium were actually fighting for the dextrose water! Both types were raging war, and it looks as if the rhizomorphic mycelia was colonizing more of the dextrose water. I placed it in the frig to make sure i could slow down growth. Day 5: I finally opened the jar and filled a 30cc syringe up with the mycelium. This is how i did it...I strained most of the water out in a sterilized pyrex glass bowl. There was a whole shitload of mycelia clinging on to the bottom of the glass. So i closed the jar and placed it back in the fridge. I took my sterilized syringe and sucked up 30cc's of the dextrose water that was in the bowl. I threw away the rest of the water. I poured the water back in the half pint jar and shook the mycelium around to make things easier for syringe suction. I then sucked up all the mycelia into the syringe and placed the syringe back in the fridge. Day 6: Prepared 12 jars of rye grain the previous day and injected 2.5 cc's of dextrose water&mycelium into the jars. Let them sit. Day 7: Very good signs of growth, i think they'll be colonized fully within 4-5 days. i was pretty shocked by the dextrose way. This means i have to update the easiest tek method once again. To anybody trying dextrose heres a small comment....Make sure you buy corn sugar, and not corn syrup. mix accordingly, it doesnt look like much but the color of the water doesnt matter anyways....you will be shocked by this. im sure many of you have tried the honey water tek, i have tried this and it seems like dextrose works way better and faster. Innoculation of jars with mycelium will grow soooo quick you will be amazed. later.

Nice job. What measures were taken to avoid contamination? Where did you purchase dextrose? Thanks for the report. Keep us updated.

yes, you can buy it at home brewing stores as corn sugar. if not that i think giant or safeway should have it. im not really sure i havent checked but if they dont have it, check a health food store. oh yeah, dextrose is way better than honey, its takes a couple days and the mycelia grows really nice in it.

have you used your dextrose water yet? friends have taken much more careful sterile precautions when preparing it before and have had disasterous results. they have found it to work with only the best sterile precautions.

I have had very good luck innoculating with Karo Syrup mycelial water. However, it takes a long time to get going in my setup (2+ weeks). Will try dextrose next. Very hit or miss with honey water.

After multi/spore innoc, the Raccon set that jar in a clean metal cabinet (light proof). Room Temp was 82 F 12 hours (day), 76 F 12 hours (night). LOL, I suppose you could call that an "incubator". When removed, jar was agitated, 30cc drawn, photo taken & a few 1 gal. polycarb grain spawn jars (w/same filter attached to lids) were innoc'ed with myc drawn from it. SixTango -- out
