The only time I ever saw a UFO (The Hessdalen Phenomenon)

It happened in late 1999 near Alvdal village in Norway where I became a witness of a luminous phenomenon in atmosphere of unknown nature known as the Hessdalen phenomenon. Most often this phenomenon can be observed in Hessdalen valley approximately 60 kilometres away from the location of my encounter. There is even a facility which observes this phenomenon full-time, known as the Norwegian "UFO observatory" (http://www.Hessdalen.org/). As far as I understand the strongest theory is that the phenomenon is a ball lightning like object caused by geological and/or electromagnetic field anomalies.

It was about six o'clock in the evening when I decided to go for a hike in the mountains. The evening was beautiful, the wind was mild and it was partly cloudy. I didn't have any special goals for my walk but to enjoy the beautiful Norwegian nature and spend a couple of hours in a solitude with myself.

One thing I wasn't prepared for was the darkness which fell upon the mountains when I was about 5 kilometres away from my hytta (a little wooden house). It was a night with no moon and I didn't have any light with me except my lighter so it took a lot more time and nerves fumbling back home than I had expected. A lot of steep slopes, unfamiliar surroundings etc. made my journey back quite an adventure.

It was after midnight and I still had a few kilometres to go when a strange light near a mountain edge about 400-500 metres away caught my eye. It was orange-yellow in color and was moving slowly in my direction. I have to admit I pretty much freaked out. I wasn't familiar with the phenomenon at the time (my friends told me about it only after I returned home and told about my experience) and being a huge "The X-Files" fan didn't make me feel very comfortable. My first thought was to run somewhere and hide, but because of the darkness running was pretty much impossible. So I just stood there petrified and stared at the object coming closer and closer and closer...

I have to say I'm very much into amateur astronomy and I can explain everything I see, from halos and weird cloud formations to bolids and satellites burning in the Earth atmosphere, but this was no astronomical phenomenon. The thing was levitating at a height of about 3-4 storey building. It flew across the valley and disappeared behind the edge of a mountain. I found this video at the Project Hessdalen home page which resembles the thing I saw (click, ~3MB).

One thing I'm sure of. I want to visit the place again :yesnod:
It's one of the most magnificent things I've ever seen.

I don't think so. As far as I know the occurances of the phenomenon are not related to the Sun activity in any way. I would go with the theory that it has something to do with the geology and electromagnetic field of the exact region.

But I haven't studied this phenomenon (hell I haven't even read the whole Project Hessdalen website). I just had a dream two days ago which reminded me about this experience and wanted to share it with the community :smile:

Maybe Norwegian Shroomerites know more about it :shrug:
