Straw vs. Straw/Poo
    #3131246 - 09/13/04 09:34 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Is there any additional benefit to using poo and straw as opposed to straw alone? I've never done a bulk grow before, and if I could cut out the poo element it would solve a lot of hassles for me.

If I can use just straw, are there any teks floating around for it? I keep reading posts about "straw balls" but I don't think I've ever read about it before.

As always, thanks for the help. I'd almost forgotten how helpful the Shroomery can be.

One benefit of using poo/straw is that the fruits are generally bigger and denser than with just straw. You can pasturize it right along with the straw.

First off, I don't know how I missed those teks (though to be fair I was pretty high at the time) so thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

As far as pasteurizing the poo and straw together that's not a problem (I can do the oven bag tek) but if the poo is fresh I won't have anywhere to leech it. So if I can cut that step out it would nice.

As far as straw alone, what are the results usually like? I've done BRF cakes cased with vermiculite with good results, so what is straw compared to that?

Thanks for all the help.

This tek has proven to work well also...

It's actually not very difficult at all. However, IME incubating does seem to be advantageous (contrary to what the tek states) because you want the straw colonized as quickly as possible. Good luck!

BTW, this is all it took to convince me to try straw:

If you collect cow poo, make sure to get the older, harder stuff, then no treatment is required. Just straw innoculated with a grain like WBS or popcorn performs well, but IMO shys in comparison to the calibur mushrooms the combination of straw and poo is capable of.
I've never even done cakes, so I can't compare BRF cakes to straw, but just look through the grow logs, you'll find that casings generally yield more than cakes, and casings with straw produce more than casings with just grain. Poo/straw IMO is the zenith of maximizing yield potential, so if your up to pasturizing some poo I recommend you do it if higher yields are what your after.

Just make sure to pay attention to detail .
