Aaaghhh!!  One of my mushrooms are gone!

The reason you pasteurize is so foreign spores can not germinate.  This is why people are so reckless with poo (exposing it to unsterile air).  Now if you sterilzie it then everything dies, even the microbes(sp?) that keep each otehr in check so then allowing anything that comes in contact to grow.

I did not take away a mush ! In fact I'll rate you a 5 if I already did'nt , I've seen you around , and you have earned it !
And either way spores will still "maybe" germinate in pasturized dung , I say maybe cause time is definetly against you when inocing with the above mentioned idea . But it is possible, to germinate spores in past. dung , hell they germinate in the wild in totally unpreped material , but nature has her own plans . :smirk:
I do understand the difference between pasturized and sterilized , and the complications that can come from each method .
Hell I even "sterilize" the water I mist with .

works better then fractional sterilization, much faster too .

hmmm. i'd say the reason you pasteurise is to remove most of the bacteria, leaving only a few badguys to stand guard and protect the newly-available nutrients from foreign invaders. now, if you dump in a powerful new source of invaders (i.e. your colonised substrate), this can storm through like the US in Iraq, and take over. the badguy motherfucka bodyguards keep the riffraff away. otherwise anybody with a peashooter can take over. foreign spores CAN germinate in pasteurised (edit: sterilised or pasteurised) goop, which is why sterilised bulk is so risky, and should be done in front of a flowhood.

just my interpretation. i didn't write any textbooks, and i've only been doing this for a year or so. get better input from one of the greats (by which i mean anno, roadkill, 6T, vatoloco, joshua, teonan, workman and a few others)

See that is odd , Cousin IT does not have a flow hood or a gloove box and has had great luck so far , very minimal and accepted losses to contams . He does agar work , G2G's , the whole works . But like my bio says cleanliness is a must .
So is a myth that you "must" have these thing to be succesful . But you need to be willing to take all other measures seriously .

You'd be best off inoculating with a mycelium solution rather than spores. Theoretically, you could pasteurize the poo/straw and put it in jars with polyfil. You could inoc. thru the polyfil. I don't know if that would be best if going bulk becuase quart jars are not that big. You might as well go all out and buy some good bags with filter patches.
