TONS of PICS from this weekend's hunt
    #3131041 - 09/13/04 08:48 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Welp, we got abour 4 or 5 inches of rain from hurricane Frances so I decided this weekend would be a good one to go out into the woods of Georgia to see what I could find.

Didn't find any actives other than the usual Panaeolus subbalteatus but I didn't get pics of those guys. I did, however get a shitload of pictures of other mushrooms. I put a new filter over my lense to protect it, and it seems to be fucking with my autofocus on the camera so a lot of awesome pictures ended up being blured to hell :\

Dial up users beware, I like my images large

Let the pictures begin:

These mushrooms are first because they sparked the most interest in me. The look like either a variation of Psilocybe weilii or perhaps even Psilocybe atlantis(very rare). Unfortunately by the time I got to them they were too aged to get a print, but the smell of them was akin to the smell of weilii and raw fish. Anyways. Here's the one pic I have that turned out:

The next mushroom in question boggles my mind. The look like Armillaria, but don't have veils and they have greenish tints to them. The green made me think they were Gyms, but if that were the case, there'd be orange spores everywhere, and there wasn't. Either way, they were growing from dead and living trees. If anyone want to ID these things, go for it(no I didn't get a spore print):

Next mushroom is a neat one to photograph, Hygrocybe pisattcina:

Lots of Amanita out this time of year:

Here are some bad ass blue-purple mushrooms I found. Again, no clue what species:

Some species of Psathyrella:

Some Russlas(I think):

An "Old Man of the Woods" (has tubes like boletes):

Lots of Boletes out, I only bothered taking pictures of the mutants or interesting ones:

I'm not sure what this mushroom was, but it was interesting none the less. The caps resemebled cubensis, they had a veil, and had greenish at the base. Oddly enough when I tore them in half, they appeared to be turning red. They were growing from forrest soil as far as I could tell:

Some decaying fungi...
A coral fungus:

An earth star:

Unfortunately I didn't bring anything along with me to put mushrooms in, so that means no prints and no mushrooms for further examination. If you'd like to make ID's based on photo's be my guest.

Very cool pictures!

Was there any blue brusing on those first ones?

I really dig the purple ones, they look crazy.

Great photos. I especially like the Hygrocybe pisattcina. Those things are so slimy and colorfull, your camera did well.

Nice collection of photos! :ooo:

Hunting out in the woods is great.

I think that your second set are Armillarias like you said (if the spore print is white) but might be the "ringless honey mushroom" species. I found those by the thousands today as i was out in the woods earlier. I am glad that you mentioned the green tints, cause i thought that i was imagining that lol. I see the green in the ones i pick also.

Were the blue ones growing from the ground? Sticks or wood debris burried beneath the dirt? I remember finding something like those in your pics but i couldnt figure out what they were. The specimens that i collected were growing from the ground and gave brown prints.

The first ones were so old and close to decay that I couldn't get any brusing out of them :frown:

I noticed a that the mycelium at the base (which was yellow) bruised green. The mycelium in the dirt at the base was whiter and it showed blue. Who knows what they are. I figure that if they grew once, they're going to grow again, and I'll find them before they rot next time. If they were weilii or atlantis, the season has just begun

I'll be checking for them agian soon though, Hurricane Ivan is forcast to come right through our area around Thursday or Friday.

Seems like the Blue things were growing from sticks. It was in an area full of downed limbs so that seems reasonable.

Here's a pic I forgot to throw in there, a habitat shot for a large majority of the mushrooms found:

awesome... not ANOTHER new species from GA... I know i know, to early to speculate, but the bluing mycelium probally means it is active, and from the look of the cap they could almost be weilii ... the stem is way different though... make sure to go back at prime time after ivan : )

Great stuff.

That vivid blue one strongly suggests Leptonia, in which case it's also pink spored. An odd group of striking mushrooms that obviously make great photos.

Happy mushrooming!

Upon the clue from ToxicMan, I further suggest the purplish ones were Leptonia Serrulata. Though your pics seem better than most I could find, the textual description fit just about perfectly. And without seeing a pink print... who knows?
