What is your tolerance level towards adult themes in books?
    #3128559 -

or movies?

Adult themes...meaning controversial/sensitive topics of all natures. Done tastefully, of course.

What do you think about them?

depends on the context.

If the makers are discussing adult themes with a purpose, rather than exploiting them for titilation, then the sky's the limit. Anything and everything should be discussed. Suppression just fucks people up.

Yes, that's what I mean. Approached realistically but with respect.

Would Lolita be an appropriate example? I think it's a fantastic book, cleverly written, both tragic and blackly humourous, enormously passionate.
When I've tried to discuss this book with some people before, they seem unable to critique it objectively.
What do you reckon?

I'm a hardcore yaoi writer with a fanbase of my own... A couple of busloads of people worldwide go bananas if I release a new one.

Adult themes should deal with and be available to consenting adults. despite my rabidly hardcore humanoid yaoi works i am very moralist. Certain things just arent agreeable with me, like inclusion of minors like in Loltita, or elements of genuine violence.

Pretty much goes with me, but other stuff is a no-go.

i dont agree with the concept of adult themes.  violence, sex, drugs and all that shit happens to everyone.  they dont discriminate between age, sex, religion.  therefor i think most things should at least be presented as an option to learn about.

i really dissagree and get very pissed off that kids cannot legally see a tit or a dick, but they can easily go watch some afgahn family get blown up and shot at with people cheering and bragging about it (news, shows, movies etc).  it really strikes a cord when shit like that happens.

i say if a child WANTS to learn about somthing, dont censor them  (like they do in schools...)

edited for appauling spelling/grammer  :smirk:

have you ever read Charles Bukowski's novels? I really find his approach to sexuality an amusing read... ok really twisted and a bit disgusting (lots of wino hookers), but so damn funny

Adult Themes are fine as long as they are done tastefully. I really can't stand bathroom humor, never have been able to stand much of it since elementry school either.

Sometimes it's just not necessary, but when it goes well with the plot, it's great. I actually enjoy when they try to break certain taboos.
