mosquito gasoline
    #3059212 -

Scientists have studied using algae for biodiesel, and some species of algae produce huge quantities of harvestable surplus energy due to high production of fats, and low energy input into the system.

The down side is that it is impossible to maintain specific species at any sizeable scale, and the system quickly gets overtaken by local microflora and microfauna, which do not produce as well, or are difficult to harvest, requiring dry spraying or centrifuge, both of which require about as much energy to extract as would be gained from the algae.

Mosquito larvae can eat almost any kind of algae or zooplankton living on the algae, and I believe they have a high fat content, and would be practly self extracting.

Does anybody have a link to the nutritional content of mosquito? I need to know the fat content.

Anyway I reckon it would take about a million mosquitoes per gallon to make, but would be environmentally very sound.

Anybody want to fund my research?

All I know is I don't want to live anywhere near that operation.

It seems to me that it would be more efficient just to use the algae as you mentioned. There's bound to be some energy loss going from the algae to the microflora/fauna to the mosquito larvae.

The best method for growing algae for fuel is to set out deveral different types of media and see what grows. Different nutrients, and pH will grow different organisms. Eventually you should find a good producer that grows well in your area. Diatoms were among some of the best producers, I believe they require a high silica content.

I still think the mosquitos would yeild a higher fat content, and lower cost of extraction, therefore would produce more useable fuel more cheaply.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are being monitored by the Forces of Darkness -- from the Mobil/Exxon-Valdez Oil-fuel companies... who will foil all attempts to create a fuel that dares be better than that which runs amok in our current machines of transit.

But, it sounds very interesting -- May the Force be with you.

I'm not sure containment would even be nessisary if it were far enough away from a populated area.

an ecosystem set up specifically to produce mosquitos as efficiently as possible could produce one hell of alot of mosquitoes, but most of them would probably be harvested at larva stage .

You might could set one up in an area in such a way that it could even reduce the amount of mosquitoes. It would therefore seem to be a good idea to set these up in areas where there is already a heavy mosquito population. You might even face the possibility of mosquito depletion affecting productivity.

This could theoretically allow more controll over the mosquito population as far as what infectious diseases they did or didn't have. (for better or for worse)

Female mosquitos require blood in order to produce viable eggs... gotta have something for them to feed on or no baby mosquitos.

Hmmm...

I really wanted to use mosquitoes. They fucking owe us, they've killed more humans than any other animal.

But I guess there's probably some other organism that would do a better job as a harvester.

I had forgotten about the blood thing.....you know you could sacrifice yourself for the project....you've probably got enough blood for a couple thousand gallons of gas...

Actually, I bet an artificial mammal could be made using a membrane and a nutrient broth.
