What Grateful Dead CD should I get? I'm going to get three new ones and the only one I have right now is American Beauty. What would you recommend? (If you could, suggest a mix of both live and studio ) - Thank you Edit: 5 shrooms to the person who comes up with the best 3 cd suggestion Edit 2: When I say a mix of both live and studio, I don't mean that the CD itself should be a mix but the suggestions should include a mix...for example: 1 studio album, 2 live albums. Keep um comin' boys...I appreciate it.

Anthem of the Sun. It's a studio album from '67 that has live recordings mixed into much of it. The whole album is a masterpiece and quite the head trip.

^^^^^Truth edit: ok since chinadoll squeezed in between me and KC I'll make myself clear. Anthem of the Sun...and if it gets too intense supplement it with some American Beauty and Working Man's Dead. Anthem of the Sun is FAR underrated....it's truly a stereo masterpiece. edit 2: chinadoll yours were great too.

I'll take the 5 but I was talking about KC's post...sorry china, your selections were great too....I mean it's not like there's a whole lot of bad dead recordings out there.

I'd also sugest since you have americian beauty, try workingman's dead. It's kinda like a companion to A.B. but any of the Dicks Picks are smooth runnings. Also, if you can find it, an album named greyfolded is a good trip album... long, bizare and scrumdillyicious!!! It consists of live "Darkstar" preformences that someone named Skyjellyfetty revamped and combined, looped, backmasked, turned out and inside in. The stuff has like time lapsed segments of Jerry singing the lyrics to DS where each sylable is from performances that are years and miles apart. Pretty cool... pretty cool... pretty neat... pretty neat...

Ladies and Gentle...the Grateful Dead. 1971 at the closing run of the Fillmore West; has so much amazing stuff with Pigpen working the keys and singing for all he's worth. Great stuff!

I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. I recommended Anthem of the Sun, because I have recently really groen to like it, but when I listened to it years ago, it took me a while to warm up to it, so Europe 72 is probably a better choice for someone new to the Dead.
