I dont find that all true holydiver. I dont use any special type of floresent light, just regular sunlight through the window and the light bulb on my ceiling and my cakes are still pinning. But i could be wrong if it varies from strain to strain.

Goatrip,
I have no experience using sunlight, so you probably right on that account! Flourescent lighting isn't the only option, just the only one I've had real success with.

If i were to use a floresant light would it initiate more pins than im already getting. Would it make em grow faster. If you can help or point me to an article explaining the relationship between shrooms and flouresant light that would be great.

Any amount of sunlight is hard as hell to reproduce with the most intense of artificial lights. If they are gettin sunlight that is the only REAL light there are getting. Fluorescents give off many many more lumens per watt than do incandescents. And they still no not even touch the scale of a short amount of sun light!! If sun light is not available in your situation, it would be wise the get the closest replacement light source. Even high output UV producing flourescents would not be considered overkill in my opion..Get'em at a pet store. Like for lizards...

I don't get it.....why does everyone instantly resort to a black light when they hear blue light spectrum. When I read about that i just went to the store and bought one of those cheap actually BLUE light bulbs. I just don't get the leap to black light when blue light is mentioned...im not picking on anyone ...I just think it is strange.

blacklight is invisible they just put the purple in to show you it's on
-no blue in blacklights(<300) ,needs a longer wavelength >480nm
yes they will grow with out light-but not like they would with it.
with no light they grow
every which way all ugly like, reminds me of growin on cakes
try it give some light to initiate, then take it away when pins form, they just don't no how to grow :)

They will grow toward the light. If no or little light, they will still grow but in all directions.
Doesn't really make any difference, you still get your shrooms.
Blue is apparently the best but I wouldn't spend to much money or go to too much trouble. They are not like pot plants, they recieve very lttle of anything from the light. No energy what so ever. The blue light just helps promote morphosis a bit better.
In nature, is the mycellium not underground or under shit and recieving NO light?

Once upon a time when I did closet growing, I only used a simple 10W house bulb. It worked fine. I did later change to a 60W bulb but that put off to much heat for the time of year I was growing.
Max is right though, mushrooms dont utilize light as energy as does plants (photosynthesis). They do need a few seconds of light to know which way is up. Without the light they grow in all different directions. With more light on one side of the growing area or room, they grow towards the light. A nice small 40 watt or so, flourescent light above the growing area should be fine to fill the area with light and not put off to much heat, unless you need the heat during colder months.
You can buy those 2 foot long flourescent workshop lights in housing for about $20 or less that do a great job of filling the growing area up with light if you need it.
