Disaster pressure cooking spawn bags, need some advice
    #2993901 - 08/11/04 11:28 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I recently tried to pressure cook some med. sized spawn bags with birdseed but ran into a major problem. While they were cooking, the water on the bottom evaporated and the bags melted and opened. One of the pc that still had water on the bottom did the same thing which makes me wonder what the hell I did wrong. Id appreciate some advice on how to make these work and also if there is another way of sterilizing the bags without using a pc.

Just a review of what I did: soaked wbs overnight, drained and rinsed next day. Filled bags about 3 in. below filter patch. Put in pc with about an 1 1/2 in. water on bottom and began to cook.

Maybe it was against the bottom of the PC, or maybe it ran dry. Either way you need to use that crappy stand that comes with a pc. You might need to elevate the stand more. Then you could put in more water.

Often times peeps doing WBS or heavily filled PC's will need longer PCing times and whatever the reason (not enough initial water, excessive giggling of the weight used to keep pressure) when you do bags you'll need towels if you know what your doing. I use two racks when doing real heavily packed PC's for the extra water capacity you can put in, anyway a towel in the bottom load it up and place a towel on top pushing it down along the sides keeping any plastic from touching the metal 250 degree metal and plastic (even autoclavable) are not a good combination IME GL and be safe bro! Also welcome to The Shroomery friend  Ya know this place should have a more professional attitude Admin/mods come on whats up with some of the shit I've been seeing? It can't be a good thing :frown:

I beleive I know what my problem was: Not using a rack or towel to prevent he bags from touching the metal. I didn't even think of it at the time becasue I was in a rush. Thanks for all the input.

do not open the fire that much .the vapour does not come out like a train vapour also the towel doesnt help you in this case imo.it will just inflate your bags it seems in this position.

I've done well over 300 bags and the towel does help  Also I place bags so the tops are folded up on the first layer and down on every remain layer and there is little to no air remaining in the bags when placed in the PC I make sure of that! Also I use one towel BTW starting on the bottom and up one side, load then flip towel over the top and down the opposite side tucking it under the botton row if possible (not always). again GL bro

At least if ya let it run dry again (should never happen again) cleanup will be much easier!
