pressure cooking without a stove
    #827689 - 08/19/02 08:25 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

I am soon to start my second attempt at cultivating P. cubensis using the PF tek. I do not have access to a stove, however, and I have already invested money in a pressure cooker. Please offer your advice on using an wall-socket plug electric burner instead of a stovetop. Is this feasible? As far as I can tell, electric burners have at most 1000 watts of power available...some have only 750, some come as dual burners, one with 500, one with 1000 watts. I was thinking that in a desperate situation, I could place the pressure cooker so that it straddles the 500 watt and 1000 watt burners, but that would be a precarious job... Is this enough power to pressure cook jars?

Any help and info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, is it possible to stack the jars inside the pressure cooker to save space? I have heard both yes and no answers in the #shroomery irc chat room, but mostly I just heard insults and immaturity. =]

Yes you can stack jars in your pc, I do it all the time. Not sure about the electric burners though. You could always return it if it doesnt work. As long as you get to 15 psi it should work.

I use to use coleman gas grill to pressure cook my stuff you might want to invest in one of those instead of that electric grill but i do think that electric grill might work but im not totaly sure.

If it generates enough heat to boil water, you'll be fine.

They sell electric hot plates at Wal Mart for $35 - $45. They will work just fine!

500 watts is plenty, once mine starts boiling I turn it down to between off and 1, so it really doesnt take much heat to maintain the pressure.

i have personally used one of those two burner units. i believe that there is only one original manufacturer for them. i use it, amoung other things to teach basic mushroom cultivation in a school environment, where a gas flame would be taboo. it is a bit slow, but it works fine.

a cheap stove fueled by charcoal briquetts can be made from a coffee can or similar. use a church-key type juice can opener to cut triangular holes all around the top and sides, do not over weaken the can, but lots of air is key. half a can of briquetts will boil water in a huge kettle. more charcoal is hotter and faster. working outside will also keep the house from getting too hot.

i don't use the above anymore, since i got a large propane crab-cooker. it is way fast.
