Stubborn belly/pectoral fat * 1
    #29713517 -

Anyone here successfully got rid of 20-30 pounds?

Over the last 7-8 years I got really lazy and was barely doing sports or workouts. I was sitting or sleeping most of the day and I put on almost 40 pounds. I'm in my mid thirties currently and way above my BMI.

Since October one year ago I picked up the work outs again and it's been really though and not showing results proportional to the amount of efforts I've given.

I started doing just weight lifting, then added abs and running over the course of a few months.

We're now a year later and I got rid of barely 7-8 pounds. My muscle definition got better though and I think my waist mesurements too, but I haven't done any measures yet. Which I'll start soon.

I used to have not the best alimentation, but since maybe the last two months I've started cutting sugar and fats mostly. Greasy shit only one time a week at most.

One thing is that I struggle getting enough sleep hours. Most days it's 5.5 - 7 hours at max. I know I have to do something about this.

Anyone has suggestions about other ways I could get results faster? I want to avoid supplements or sketchy stuff if possible. Feel free to suggest modifications to the training regimen or alimentation.

I will post in here once a month with the progress I made, hopefully encouraging others who struggle with fitness to get back in shape too.

This is my current work out schedule

Strength/lifting ranging from 20-35 minutes / session - 5 times a week
Abs training 20 minutes / session - 3 times a week
Jump rope 10 minutes / session - 3 times a week
Morning walk 45 minutes every day

You can't outrun a bad diet. Our bodies are pretty calorically efficient and we have basically unlimited access to hyper calorie dense foods. I think you'll see more progress from cutting out sugar. Great job so far, keep it up đź’Ş

:whathesaid: It is often said that abs are made in the kitchen. A caloric deficit is the only way. You may need to change radically the way you eat. Protein is key. Aim for a daily minimum of 2 grams of protein for every kilogram of your ideal body weight. If you prioritize protein it will become easier to resist the cravings for carbs and fats. Whenever you feel the cravings, eat protein first (protein shake, protein bar, grilled chicken, boiled eggs, etc). You will notice that you can control better those cravings if you eat the protein first. Walking is an underrated activity for burning calories. I wish you success in your goals. Your health is important.

:whathesaid:Yep fewer calories worked for me. I lost 30 pounds this year. Went from 200 to 170. If I don't stay right on diet it easily drifts back to 180 and then I buckle down again to stay mid 170s. Only exercise is 10 pushups a day and a bit of stretching. I should do more but I'm old and I don't.

So you’re getting better definition and the scale isn’t moving much. Sounds like you’re recomping, so you’re probably building muscle and burning fat, which is actually the most ideal way to do it. I wouldn’t worry too much about the number on the scale and  focus more on doing weekly or bi weekly pictures and measurements to track your progress. Sounds like you’re on the right track so far.

I’d suggest finding your TDEE and adjusting your macros and building out a carb cycling plan. Back when I coached, one big thing with my clients was having them stay consistent  and on point until they start making the progress they want and then they can relax a little bit and not worry about being exact with everything. Unless you’re doing a show, there’s no point in being strict. Just gotta find that flow first

And sleep is just as important as nutrition. If you’re not sleeping long or well enough, everything can be in point and you won’t make progress. Sleep is when your body regulates your hormones and you recover, so it’s crucial.

As for your workouts, it looks perfect. Lifting 5 days a week and not overdoing cardio-which is another great way to spike cortisol and stall progress. With your workouts, id just make sure you track them and every week focus on either adding a little bit of weight or reps to your lifts-linear progression is how you build muscle and more muscle=higher metabolism and higher metabolism=better fat loss.

Pretty simple once you get it down.  Hope this helps!

Awesome answers so far! Yeah I'll focus more on the diet and keep this training routine, might add a little stuff. Gonna watch my sleep a lot more too. Had fucking 11 hours yesterday, cause I partied on Friday and had to catch up. I feel absolutely excellent today.

Have to stop the drug binges though, its clearly counter productive and doesn't add any real value to my life atm.

Thanks to all who commented

In my experience my pectoral and belly areas are the last place I lose fat.  Would be nice if it came off evenly but that’s not the case.

I’m in a similar situation in that I got really lazy over the past 4-5 years and put on quite a bit of weight.  I’m in my late 40’s and now finding myself having difficulty keeping up with my kids as they get older.  I’m 6’4” and was 245 lb at the beginning of September and  am now down to 228.  My goal is 180 with some recomposition so I’ve got a ways to go.

The thing that works best for me for consistent weight loss is calorie counting.  It used to be a real pain in the ass but there are a number of apps that make it really convenient and let you track macros as well.  I use “Lose It!” and like it enough to not try anything else.  The thing that I like about calorie counting is you inevitably hit plateaus and counting lets you trim off 1000 calories a week or so to get you back on track.

Yeah calorie tracking makes it pretty straightforward. I cut down to 1500 a day and lost 20lbs in about 3 months. Right when I hit that point I completely got stuck, wasn't losing anymore weight, started getting sick literally every other week.

Cranked the calories back up to 18-1900 and started losing very slowly but steadily and feeling better all around.

I don't think I'd recommend a drastic calorie cut like I did for so long, but it got me down to almost where I want to be so now I can take my time losing the last 10. I kept strength training and doing cardio a couple times a week, walking 2-3 miles daily throughout it

Oh yeah 1500 per day is really hard to maintain.  My sweet spot is about 1800-1900 as well and lets me lose about 1.5 lb per week without being constantly thinking about food.  Certainly takes longer but I’ve found I have trouble sticking to the plan long term if I get my calories too low.

Download a free calorie counting app and track everything that goes into your mouth. Fixing your sleep will help too.

Thanks y'all

Yeah I have to keep track of the calories. Actually I was kinda doing that last September. Well, not exactly... I was keeping track of the calories burned through exercise + the total calories burned though the day (pretty easy with a Fitbit) but not the ones ingested. Which are the more important part of the equation I guess... the reason being that it seems so demanding?

Lets say you eat a burger you gotta write down : 2 slices of bread, one spoonful of mayo, 1 slice bacon etc? It just seems really tedious, but if its what I got to do to see results I'll do so.

I had used AI and asked it : lets say I keep the same diet (at my current height/weight etc) how much more exercise should I do to burn 20 pounds in X months and it told me I had to burn 1.2k calories through exercise alone/day. Which is the plan I followed through all of September. I averaged at exactly 1.2k for that month.

It resulted in huge fatigue though and thankfully didn't get injuries. After the first week I felt so irritated, I never experienced that before. Probably I got a huge cortisol spike since I put my body through such huge changes abruptly. It got easier with time though. But in hindsight it was fucking ridiculous. I was basically doing exercise/moving/walking all day and 100% committed to do just this. Thankfully I had no obligations or life project for that time... I still felt that after it my body became more sturdy/solid so still happy I put myself through that hell.

At the start of October I was pretty burned out, but I picked up the works outs again here and there and slowly built myself to the current plan I posted last time. It feels much more balanced now, but still pretty demanding. This is much healthier though and it permits me to have some diversified activities in my schedule.

I def feel it's starting to pay off... can't wait to measure my progress next month!

Btw some of you addressed some interesting things to which I wanted to reply to... but since I just wrote a huge wall of text I'm keeping it for next time. I've spent all my mental juice for today.

I'm not forgetting you

I used cronometer and you can just scan the bar code or label of what you're eating and it logs it

For something like a takeout burger there are preset options you can use that give you a rough estimate, or you can ask AI and just type in the calorie guess. If you're cooking at home though it's pretty easy to just weigh what you're using and enter it into the app, takes me maybe a minute or two extra for a meal with lots of ingredients. I don't try to get everything perfect and if weight loss is the goal I round up

After I did it for a couple weeks I ended up just knowing the ball park calories of pretty much everything I was eating so I didn't really need the app anymore

Before smartphones it was a real pain in the ass to track calories.  A friend of mine was doing it back in 2005 and had to carry around a little notebook and pencil with him all the time.  I don’t know where he got the calories from but he never stuck with it and never lost much weight.

A lot of the apps have a database of foods other users have already logged so you can pull from there, especially if it’s a name brand food or a meal from a chain restaurant.  As feevers pointed out a lot of them also have barcode scanners.  A food scale is also really handy.  You probably already have one if you grow stuff.

Don’t use AI for this stuff, you’re gonna be spinning your wheels or even go backwards. If you’re sticking to whole, nutrient dense foods it’ll be way easier to track. Do that 5-6 days a week and then have your burger or whatever you want the other 1-2 days and don’t worry about tracking it. People tend to make this stuff way more complicated than it needs to be. And like I said before, unless you’re stepping on stage, there’s no reason to be so obsessive about it.

Incredible guys. This is the kind of info I need, keep it going!

I do have a kitchen electronic scale and started to use it but kinda went fuck that after like one time lol. I'll force my ass to use in the upcoming future

Yeah I guess at a certain point tracking things too much becomes a nuisance more than it helps.

Edit: I certainly witnessed the AI contradict itself haha. It basically told me that its own plan, that it proposed to me before was counterproductive and no good.

Lots of infos in there I'll have to read the thread again and contemplate the different options.

AI is plenty helpful if tracking calories is the goal, especially with takeout. It'll never be exact but it'll give you a range and acting on the conservative side of that range will keep you on track 99% of the time

Being obsessive about it is a great start if your goal is weight loss. Losing weight is a skill, and (reasonable, healthy) obsession is one of the best ways to develop a skill. You don't need to stay obsessed though, as I said after just a couple weeks of logging food I already knew roughly what was in everything I was eating, and even today I just keep a rough tally going in my head to hit my goal

It's very easy for one "cheat meal" to blow away all the saved calories that week, and turn a week of losing into a week of gaining. One rib dinner and beer from your local steakhouse can be the difference between losing a pound that week or not. That adds up hugely over the course of a year

If I'm really trying to lose I still get plenty of guilty pleasure meals in, but since I'm tracking them I can make sure that I make up for the calories elsewhere

Horrible night of sleep again.

I know I said no supplements, but that's mainly concerning the weight issue, not the sleeping one.

I do have some magnesium tablets that I forget to take everyday. I had some yesterday but it did no good.

Any other OTC stuff that's reliable? I used to take Valerian but I don 't really like the smell and taste of it. I think it gave me nightmares too.

Other than this, I had a really productive lifting session this noon. I normally take a small break at the 10 minutes mark, but this time I crushed all the way to the end, no pause. Music is giving me some great focus and energy, I can feel myself slowly transforming into a greater state of being.

I need some more rest this afternoon though.

Why is your sleep so shitty? Do you use a lot of caffeine or nicotine? Alcohol?
