Good question. Since we weren't there we are just taking the violet men at there word.
For all we know she hit him first. But didn't do enough damage to injure him. We have a legal system in place for a reason. If it was that bad the police could have changed them.  I've heard nothing about anyone including the women being charged so its fair game in my book.

It's really easy to understand what happened .
