Our Newest National Landmark Makes me proud to be an American... Fresno Dump a National Landmark FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - It holds an estimated 79 million cubic yards of rotting garbage, has polluted the groundwater and is a Superfund toxic waste site. And now the Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill is officially a historic landmark. However, after several media inquiries, Dennis Galvin, deputy director of the National Park Service, issued a letter Monday night recommending that Interior Secretary Gale Norton withdraw the honor. ``We were unaware that the landfill was listed as a Superfund site,'' said Mark Pfeifle, a spokesman for Norton. ``With that new information, we'll consult with local officials and the EPA and make a decision.'' Norton gave the landmark designation to the 145-acre dump earlier Monday. The landfill, which operated from 1935 to 1987, was the first ``to employ the trench method of disposal,'' Norton said in a news release. ``Are you kidding?'' asked City Councilman Brian Calhoun. ``Despite good intentions and what was once state-of-the-art engineering, this landfill continues to pose a threat to human health and the environment,'' said Leo Kay, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Agency (news - web sites) in San Francisco. ``While it is not necessarily our place to agree or disagree with such a designation, it does seem to take our national landmark status to a new level.'' The former dump was one of 15 sites across the nation that Norton named to the landmarks list Monday, her first historic landmarks action since taking office this spring. The landfill was recommended for landmark status by Martin Melosi, a professor of history at the University of Houston, and Robie Lange, a Park Service historian. It was a milestone for public health, Melosi wrote the 1981 book ``Garbage in the City.'' In order to reduce rats and other vermin, the facility covered trash with dirt every day, rather than burning it or just piling it up. The trench method worked, and remains a national standard, Melosi said. However, the landfill also has been on the EPA's Agency's Superfund list for 12 years. It has polluted the Fresno groundwater with leaking oil, paint, solvents and other toxics, generates methane gas that must be burned off. Cleanup will cost the city $23 million to clean up, according to the EPA. Environmentalists ridiculed the landmark status. ``This is what the Bush administration undoubtedly would like to do to the entire state of California,'' said Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club. ``Trench it, compact it and shovel dirt over it.''

A problem like that does not appear simply because Dubya is President. I'm sure it was an inherited problem from Bill (slick willie) Clinton's regime. Don't try to blame a huge dump problem on a president that's not responsible for it. It's Clinton's mess that Bush inherited. If any President is responsible Clinton is, but I don't even blame the Clinton era government for the mess. Maybe you should blame the people that run the dump instead of trying to use conservative republicans as a scapegoat for every environmental problem when they had nothing to do with it. Stop using the wimpy cop outs and place blame where blame is due. Why is it that liberals feel compeled to blame all the worlds problems on conservative rebublicans? Maybe it's because they can not stand to live with themselves knowing that they are not perfect. Or maybe they they project their frustration onto a convenient scapegoat (conservative republicans). Take care, RG

The point is not the dump itself, it's that Dubya's Interior Secretary named it a national landmark!

You people are so silly! "Blame it on the Republicans!" "Blame it on the Liberals!" Look here, fact is that we made a mess, now lets do what we can to clean it up. Who cares what we call it! Call it a dump or a landmark, I don't give a shit, as long as we take care of the problem. I'm sure this particular site has spanned several administrations, both republican and democrat. But you people are to busy pointing the finger of blame at each other while the real problem just goes un-answered. C'mon now, does it really matter WHERE it came from or WHAT we call it? Its there, deal with it! And learn from our mistakes. Its not that hard. The article states: "Environmentalists ridiculed the landmark status." NO SHIT! Environmentalists will ridicule anything done during Bush's rein. If this were last year (Clintons rein) the article would read "Environmentalists praise the move because the landmark status will bring much needed funds to aid in the clean-up efforts." Leave the politics out of this kind of stuff and we will all be much better off. Unfortunately, politics (not the enivironment) is the number one concern of groups like The Sierra Club and Greenpeace.

Environmentalists will critise/ridicule/demonise anything if they are low on cash. Thats how they get 100s of millions of dollars in income! No health/environment scare= no jobs for greenpeace&ELF
